He's right though, a lot of the mass churned stuff is a bit on the tasteless, rubbery side of things.

That's not to say there aren't fab cheeses out here.

I think the difference is much like the craft beer scene. You're either looking at the cheapo own brand style, similar to Pabst, or you're looking at the bulk churn that's convenient everywhere and cheap but it's really not good at all like the Bud, or you spend a bit more and get some quality. At least with the cheese, it's a little easier to find the decent stuff these days. Things have improved a lot over the last few years in the availability without the need of going to a speciality store.

I have seen some smoked cheddar in the US. You may want to try Norseland, Inc. - Store Finder

Grocery Outlet and New Seasons are the places to go for cheese around here.

There is definitely more here to like than not to like.

But that's not going to stop me complaining about the things I miss and can't get.

This seemed to indicate that it was available there, but perhaps it is just misleading:

Good!

If you want a good cheddar look for the Cabot wrapped in dark blue wax (or cloth if you can afford it).

Must be bad then because Golden Corral is pretty rank ( that's my opinion)

Harvester is a third-rate Berni, and Berni wasn't that great anyway. Golden Corral is a special sort of bad. Aside from serving poor quality steaks I don't see much in common between Harvester and GC.

As ever, I think it depends on which ones you go to and at what times in the case of buffets. Generally, been impressed with Golden Corral, though. For the price (30 bucks for 2) and the variety of food they put on, very hard to go wrong

It's fine if you don't mind picked over, re-heated food.

Buffet restaurants are one of the biggest health hazards for food poisoning and gastric illnesses , more so than fast food joints.

But again, that's my opinion plus I work for a County Health Department and see the restaurant reports on a regular basis.

Speaking of the Harvester...slight tangent....but anyone know if the Toby Carvery is still about?

There used to be one of each practically opposite each other on the way home from uni...not the best places to eat, but as a starving student, they did some amazingly cheap lunch deals for a roast lunch buffet...just picked which ever one was doing the better deal that particular time on the way home
