That's what I thought, but there used to be quite a lot of them around when I was at uni, but hardly ever hear anyone talk about them these days, so wondered if they had scaled right back or disappeared.

True. No lack of those around here. A fulfilling meal for pennies.
Restaurants here also have "menu del dia". Great food in huge quantities. With drink and choice of desserts. Usually €8 or less.
