Luckily I now live in the US, and I was reading just yesterday that the US has military bases in 150 countries.

So not quite up there with that fine British record, but well on the way!

That article only says military bases in 63 countries. The "influence over 191 countries" I believe relates to bases like the one in Oman which "influences" Saudi Arabia, and the whole of the Arabian peninsula as well as Iraq and Iran. Bases like Diego Garcia and Fairford that can be used to operate B52's can project American "influence" over pretty much any country that America feels moved to "persuade".
