Fox News is like a bad imam -- they tell the converted what they want to hear, but they can't persuade anybody who doesn't want to be persuaded.

This tweet probably goes a long way in explaining that Fox News piece....

But just to show that the Internet truly is a great thing, here are some of the brilliant replies he received......

Catholicism is a centralized faith. But Judaism, most of the Protestant Christians and Islam are not.
Perhaps this is one of the problems here: There is this insistent and inaccurate belief that Islam is some kind of top-down religion where everyone is part of the same clique. But they aren't. Depicting Muslims as some broad coherent club of 1.7 billion believers may be emotionally satisfying, but it is factually deficient.

I just read this article, though - interesting take about the influence of the internet.

It may be factually deficient, in that it is not 100% accurate, but I don't think you can use that fact to discount the idea substantially. Wikipedia tells us that 85-90% of Muslims are Sunni, and 15% are Shia. Further, I read that Saudi Arabia is approx 90% Sunni, and Iran is approx 89% Shia. So I would imagine that those Muslims who identify themselves as Sunni would "listen" to (identify with) clerics from SA, and those who identify themselves as Shia would "listen" to (identify with) clerics from Iran. Again, I'm not suggesting this is a majority behavior, but it is enough of a minority to be statistically relevant.

Most faiths are decentralized, and Islam is no exception. Catholicism is a notable exception -- the pope is effectively the king of all Catholics, one who has divine authority and gets to make the rules; defy the pope, and you could (theoretically) be excommunicated.
An imam is more like a teacher, one who may have a few or many followers. They don't necessarily all see eye-to-eye on everything.

I am not sure what a certain poster expects average Muslims to do, since their vocal objections and condemnation of such barbaric acts seems insufficient to satisfy him. Perhaps they are expected to take up weapons and go to war with the extremists. Well, many of them are against ISIS. The condemnation of 911 came from Imams, Mullahs and Islamic scholars in every Arab or Islamic country in the world except Iraq as well as candle light vigils in sympathy from Tehran to Palestine to Pakistan etc.
Qur’anic verse:
“Who so ever kills a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and who so ever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind,” (Al-Ma’dah:32).

'My take is that I'm not going to get sucked into your weird trolling. Enjoy your religion, I support your right to worship. Now DFO.'

I usually reserve the label 'troll', ( as with 'nazi', 'racist', 'stupid' etc ) but I would like to know- are you a recent immigrant to USA?
Things changed a lot after 9/11.
@Steerpike,
thanks, my son has been setting up my computer, it's great now with Google Chrome ad-blocking- could that mean I don't see things like 'quote'?
I can see the option it just does not let me tick the box.
Not that I think it matters who said it, it's response to the actually content which is useful?

@dakota44
they did today what all free people would do to maintain their position- stood up and said en masse- enough, I may have this cultural or religious leaning- but it doesn't mean I will ever support psychopaths who hijack my beliefs. A true Muslim does not murder!
Go ahead French people, Vive la République!

Some Muslims are intolerant nasty bastards, others are perfectly nice people. Just like the rest of us.
