Re: 2020 Election
The providers of the care can still compete for the business of making people well again, drug companies can continue to make profit (they do outside the USA still) and Insurance companies can still provide cover to people and make some profit as well in up-selling beyond just fixing you. Everyone wins, free markets still have a large say, just that you enshrine a right to care. It's absurd that the USA wants access to the NHS for purchasing of drugs to undercut the local market - why would they want to be using a social medicine provider!

Re: 2020 Election
Everyone pays a small amount for the Basic universal cover, even if they also have Private - that can either be direct on the employee/self employed, or you can take some via companies and they'd automatically reduce their own provision anyway. |
Re: 2020 Election
The issue I see is if you go the Elizabeth Warren route and ban private options and just have Medicare and Medicaid as the buyers then how does the whole system continue. My understanding from those in the Biz is that Medicare rates are not too bad but Medicaid are well below cost and you need a good balance to make the numbers add up.
I assume the costings are done on current Medicare and Medicaid rates. Apologies if this has been addressed by her campaign and I missed it. |

Re: 2020 Election
What about Medicare rates, would they be OK, is the $500 in your example practical?
|
Re: 2020 Election
In my experience there is some margin in Medicare rates, perhaps 10-15% in an average case. There is no margin in Medicaid patients at all.

For a for-profit, probably not, my facility is a not for profit so we get certain tax breaks that allow us to be more flexible. |

Re: 2020 Election
Personally, I would have no problem voting for Harris for president, but then again I wouldn't vote for Trump if someone had a gun to my head (and in GA, they might )
She has problems though. Not only is she a women, but she is a women of color, and one wonders if Obama/Trump voters are prepared to swing quite that far back. She also has a problem with her record, she was a prosecute rather than a public defender, and that will inevitably lead to her getting tagged for any controversial decisions she took as AG. She already has a problem with black voters it seems. Biden is far ahead of her in that demographic. |
Re: 2020 Election
She seems to have been playing the African American card and she is actually Jamaican/Indian and on the Jamaican side a descendent of a slave owner.

If that's playing the "African American Card" then... ok. Sounds like it's the other side that would like to play that card against her. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...9ae9d2c462.jpg She's very impressive. Not ready to vote for her yet, but she is one of about five that I would be fine with as the Democratic candidate. As for baggage, the biggest thing that will be held against her is that when she was San Francisco's DA, she declined to press for the death penalty in a case where a police officer was murdered. The murderer got life without possibility of parole. It was a hugely controversial moment with Dianne Feinstein denouncing the decision at the police officer's funeral. |

Just a sample: As a California prosecutor and later, attorney general, Harris fought to uphold wrongful convictions secured through departmental misconduct, endorsed efforts in California to criminalize truancy, and oversaw a department that argued the state of California couldn’t release some prisoners because it would reduce the number of prison laborers. And of course those affected would be disproportional African Americans. Which probably also impacts the concern from that community about her being so identified. Would she qualify for Reparations? I assume not. ⠀‹I know enough to be slightly taken back when she went after Biden when her own past has so many issues. |

Over 65 - Medicare provided 'for free' by govt. (no change) Under 65 choosing to 'opt in' to Medicare - pay a fee to the govt to cover the cost Under 65 choosing to stay with private insurance - pay a premium to an insurance company (or get the premium paid by the employer). In other words, you can't provide 'M4A' through taxation. I'm perfectly OK with that but would it work? |
