So if Trump wont call out white supremacists, shows what kind of person he is, not a good one, but most already knew that.

I'm starting to think that I should have just gone to a dark corner of the house and held my own mass-debate session, at least it would have had a satisfactory outcome...

Not sure about the 3% who said they are waiting for the debate.

I didn't watch, but... many people thought Hilary "won" the debates in 2016. And it didn't matter. I guess it's commonly said that you can't win an election with debates, but you can potentially lose.

As I said months ago....Biden can handle Trump

Biden won the first debate easily!
Trump is bluster but that can never be a substitute for knowledge and ability. Trump was bush league.

I'm sure some of Trump's base will come away confused as to who to vote for, as Biden showed himself as just as capable of insulting his opponent to his face.

If the Biden campaign has any sense they will say no to any more debates, as that wasn't a debate it was a bun fight.

Do debates ever move the needle? I can see why they might in the primaries, but at this stage devotees just want "their" candidate score points off the other candidate. I really doubt they change anyone's mind. I suppose it's just possible a debate might convince someone to go and vote when they weren't going to bother, but other than that it's hard to see much coming of them.

Wallace had a tough job; he did fairly well for a Fox News guy! I suspect the Trump campaign will hammer Wallace and/or Fox for TRYING to hold Trump to the 2 minute / finish speaking rule. I'm actually shocked a Fox News guy was chosen as a moderator.

I don't think Trump ever lost his scowl. His 'look' was not good, in my view.

But the bottom line is, I think - Biden did not fall over, or fall asleep, or say anything stupid. Trump didn't say anything new. Trump was obnoxious in his repeated interruptions, and never once cracked a smile. Trump clearly didn't like being in that format.

I felt that Biden did 'quite well', on balance, and that ... as others are saying - nothing changed, so Biden is still ahead.

Worse than that... he said the Proud Boys should "Stand down and stand by". As one commentator said, that's dog whistling with a megaphone.

I follow current events and politics well enough and I only have a very vague knowledge of what the "Proud Boys" are (some lame hard-right group of course). So either candidate's vague statements about vaguely-known groups such as PB or "Antifa" is not going to have much real effect on anything.

Just looking on their Telegram page, they have predictably embraced a name check during the Presidential debate, adding the words "stand back" above, and "stand by" below their Fred Perry wreath logo.

Re: 2020 Election

Trump lowered the bar for future Presidential debates forever. And when Trump lent aid and comfort to racist groups, that was the moment he ended any chance he could have had to revive his campaign especially with independent voters. Trump is a very damaged person. Someone did a poor parenting job. And after this debate we can finally put to rest the idea that Trump is a very smart man. He has some cleverness but that is not a substitute for being a smart or wise person. I suspect Biden will win the next debate as well. People are already voting and this debate will probably not change the blue wave heading Trump's way.
We are doing an excellent job canvassing here in Michigan and I have never seen so many Biden/Harris signage . Voters are stoked.

Re: 2020 Election

According to fivethirtyeight reaction podcast an immediate poll snap asked 'Who won the debate' - putting Trump 41%, Biden 48%.

So the same numbers as the national race then! That's the very definition of zero impact.

Personally I thought Biden held his own after he got into the groove. He was a little wobbly in the first 20 minutes - simply because I don't think he could cope with the barrage of crap Trump was speaking. Lest we forget he has a stammer, and it's even harder for stammerers to talk when they keep being interrupted and losing their rhythm (or so I have read).

He did better than I would have. I would have wanted to walk over to Trumps podium and smack him in the mouth.

Two tired old pensioners. One doddery old slightly confused one and one asshole loudmouth. The "best" men for the job. Pathertic.

Dunno what these "debates" are for anyhow.

Next time I want to hire someone for a position I suppose I should have all of the candidates in a room together and let them shout over each other until I give up and hire one of them?

I thought UK politics were crap, but eff me...
