News reports suggest 7000 ballots waiting for verification.

I always vote in person as I enjoy the "buzz' of seeing democracy in action. I actually feel quite emotional about it.

In fact they are less open to fraud as we sign the outside envelope and that signature is checked against the signature on record at DMV. The people doing the checking are trained by handwriting expects from the Oregon State Police. If the signature doesn't match you get a letter or phone call requesting you attend the elections office to present ID and confirm it is your ballot.

But there is also the issue of the mail actually arriving. Twice this year every single piece of mail that I put in the box on a specific date didn't arrive until three whole months after they were mailed. Who knows what corner of the PO they'd been moldering away in.

Take it to a drop off ballot box. You can go online in Oregon and check that your ballot has been returned, they mark it as received when the signature check is done, mine was received October 26th.

Anyway, it was a nice morning, I didn't mind standing in a line for a few minutes. I'd have walked there if I had got up early enough.

Basically how California does it.

They email the ballot and signature form to me, each sheet had a bar code which I assume is to ensure the ballot is legit and only used once.

I had to sign the signature sheet which is also an oath and under perjury you swear it's only you who voted, and you only voted once, and are not registered anywhere else, sign that.

That sheet goes into the envelope with the ballot. The back of the mailing envelope had to be signed and dated to ensure it's not been opened before reaching the registrar of voters.

Once they get it, they verify the signature is the same as on file from registering.

If it all matches they send an email saying all is well, and your ballot is valid and will be counted.


I have no idea how it's done in person as I have lived outside the US in all the elections I have been eligible for except the 2000, but for that one I was out of my home area for work training so had to do absentee as well, so I have never had the chance or option to vote in person.
