Yes exactly, the closest you can get to guess someone's nationality even if you hear them speak is Eastern European, but I couldn't tell unless someone told me whether they were Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Romanian, Slovakian, etc. Therefore we could both have seen thousands of Romanians in Spain, doing all kinds of jobs, and never have known it.
Speaking of the beggars' mode of dress, we once saw a bunch of women with children getting off a bus in our town. They were dressed quite unremarkably in jeans, T-shirts and blouses. Then they opened their bags, pulled out their long skirts and headscarves and off they went for a day's work! We don't see the Roma beggars around here any more, they must have moved elsewhere in search of richer pickings. I don´t see why they can´t sell little packets of tissues, if they do I usually buy one from them, I don´t mind that. Although it is sort of begging it gives them a bit of pride because it is a trade and not a limosna. That way they are sellers and the "givers" are buyers, and everyone involved feels better. |
Re: Would you go back to the UK ?
The half a million Romanians living in Spain always surprises me, where are they?
There aren't many in my area, apart from a large car dealership I presumed to be Spanish. I found out they were Romanian, hard-faced, shifty-eyed people, but no different to car dealers all over the world. They're out and out crooks, not because they're Romanian, but because they're car dealers. They clock all their cars and specialise in insurance write offs, cut and shut jobs as we used to call them in the UK. I don't want to sound racist, but I can't tell them apart, Serbo Croats, Albanians, Russians, Lithuanians, they all look the same to me. Maybe I should pay a visit to Specsavers. |

HBG, do you know this for a fact? Or are you just being a racist as you sound?
Well, it's late, I notice you live in Mijas Costa, Fuengirola. I lived there many years ago and thought it was a shithole, hopefully it's a lot better now. |

You're a strange guy with some strange ideas and a weird way of living in Spain. In answer to your question, Yes is probably the most appropriate reply.

Re: Would you go back to the UK ?
Find it hard to believe folk kind tell the difference between Polish and Romanian (personally wouldnt buy a car off of either) when they hear it spoken, I can't speak either but they sound so different. It's like French and Italian etc you don't have to speak the languages to be able to identify the difference, you just know. Maybe I would have been one of those in Biblical days that could have spoken in tongues or at least understood them.

I live not far from Bognor Regis and the town has changed dramatically over the years. It has at least two 'eastern European food stores' an eastern European pub owned by same and catering for same. It has at least one second hand/pre owned shop aimed at eastern Europeans. There is a Polish butchers. There is an Eastern European money exchange bureau. The local police seem to have moved on the shite element that were here a few years ago, I am talking about the ones that used to hang around parks and car parks drunk as a Lord. The Tesco express is staffed (it appears) by mainly Eastern Europeans. From what I see there are now so many 2nd generation kids coming through that it's all becoming a blur. And NO they are not on the dole, they are working in fields/factories all around the area. The queues outside the employment agencies in the morning of migrant workers waiting for mini-buses to take them wherever is reminiscent of years ago. I interview loads of kids who names I couldn't begin to pronounce. We need these people and they seem to need us. Once their own countries get their act in order and they return, which many will, it may will leave the UK with a massive shortfall. There aren't many British kids that will get up at 5 in the morning and rush off to pick cabbages or whatever for 8 hours a day for minimum wage or less. |

Re: Would you go back to the UK ?
The nearest city to where I live has a Russian quarter, right next to the Gypsy quarter. It's easy to tell them apart, the Russian quarter doesn't have the same amount of graffiti, and they get up early to go to work.
It's a bit more difficult to tell them apart at midnight, neither area is safe and there are fighting drunks everywhere. In contrast, the British quarters are havens of peace and tranquillity. By midnight all the lights are out, the music has stopped playing and 30,000 pensioners are safely tucked up in bed. |

When you hear of employment agencies recruiting directly in Poland for low-paid menial jobs in the UK, surely the situation has gone too far? |

Over generous benefits prevents low paid jobs being filled.

The little evidence I've seen is that plenty of local people apply for jobs when they are advertised. It may be the case that jobs in isolated country areas are difficult to fill, but I take all these stories of Brits not wanting work, with a huge dose of salt. "More than 1,700 people apply for 8 barista jobs in Nottingham" http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...p-8501329.html |
