Nias seems to think he has stumbled among amateurs (a real lost lamb?) All the things he says are as obvious to a serious Web designer as 'switch off the water first' would be to a plumber.

He may find some of my blog posts useful. (The URL is in my signature.)

Do I remeber something about grandmothers and eggs…?

Maybe you should also look at some Spanish web sites too all the crap bits like email links opening and closing icons etc etc... it is not only the British in your part of the world that cannot do good or should that be well designed websites.

dr-designer;
Did not know this was your post, as I said was offering my services to littlelamb. Anyway seeing you were so desperate for me to look at your blog

I WENT --I SAW--I WAS UNIMPRESSED Sorry if you keeping pushing your product expect some feedback. Its to much like any many other template users blogs. Further discussion should be on a forum dedicated to web design , find one and you can discuss all manner of things with your peers in the industry. May even meet you in one of them
End of my discussion on this subject.

Regards
Nias

If we could kindly cease the "I'm better than you" discussion, and bear in mind that self promotion of any kind on this site is not allowed, I would appreciate it greatly

Nias is quite right: my blog uses a standard Wordpress template, with just a few changes to the style sheet to bring its colours into line with the main site. I wonder if he has also noticed that this very forum site is also based on a standard template?

There is a good reason for this, in both cases: people will concentrate on the words.

I do not use templates for business sites (as Nias could have discovered, if he used a tiny bit of initiative). Nor did I offer my blog for its visual appeal. I suggested Nias might like to read some of the posts, over the last couple of years, so he could see that his themes were already familiar to some of us.

OK, I did ask for the one upmanship to cease .... this is a thread about someone asking to be taught in web design, and if you want to offer then pm the OP.

I have a question for Dr Designer, or anyone else with a bit of knowledge.

I am a total pleb when it comes to websites (don't know what html, php, ftp, sql means). However I did create my own website using one of those programmes for idiots where you can create a website without having to delve into any of that code stuff. (I used SiteStudio 6).

Anyway, these programmes obviously have their limitations. My website consists of nothing but text and photos because that is all the programme allows.

However, now I wish to soup it up a bit. I would like my "contact" page to have a formulario for clients to fill in. I would also like to be able to put links on certain words so that when people click on them their Outlook opens up with my email address already filled in (you know what I mean, right?).

So, my question is.......does the fact that I made this website using SiteStudio completely screw up my chances of having these two things put into my site? If these things were put into my site "externally", ie not via Site Studio, what would happen the next time I try to update my web from SiteStudio???

Thx

Free Information.

It is easy to add a bit of code to open an email client simply add <a href="mailto:test@somewhere">basic email</a> All you have to do is fill in the correct address. There are loads of websites about how to write a web page.

Thanks for trying to help.

I'm afraid I can't even FIND the code for my website, let alone insert the code you have kindly given me in the appropriate place!!!!

I did warn you I am a pleb when it comes to websites!

You have to insert it where you need it in a any page where you want.
I have just done a Google for webdesign for beginners...here is one, which i have not read through, but may be of help.
http://www.how-to-build-websites.com/
I see that you have a Mac, and I have found online that the programme you are using stopped begin developed way back in 2005. Maybe time to find a more up to date programme. Again you should Google for this.
But maybe you should seek someone with some experience who can write it all for you and who can do some work to promote and optimise it (SEO). If you need the website for your business then it will be worth it in the end.

SiteStudio 6 Pro is one of those "What you see is what you get" things....consequently I have never seen any of the code for my website, nor do I know where to look to find it. If I could find the code, then yes I guess I could just insert the bit of code you gave me earlier in the appropriate place.

I don't have a Mac (not sure where that came from??).

Although my website is for my business I don't use it to capture new clients, it is more of a support for existing clients, so fortunately I don't have to get bogged down with SEO.

Sorry I looked up the programme on the web and saw it was for a Mac.

I looked up the programme you sue and found the website for it...then I went to look at some examples they have got of websites built by the programme. I found one with the code suggested for an email link.
So there must be way for you to add an email link.
Maybe contact them by email on this page.

As Rugbymatt mentioned if you have a Mac and it has iWeb you can do it there but there is a fantastic Mac only application for building web sites called Freeway from softpress.com, reasonably priced too.

[ Sorry, I see from a later post you don't have a Mac... anyway, might help others]

BTW, it is not advised to use <a href="mailto:test@somewhere">basic email</a> to set an email address on a web page as bots will pick it up in no time and add it to spam lists, if you need to set it like this then use javascript to set the address as follows:

Code:
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript">
  document.write('user@' + 'thedomain')
</SCRIPT>
Anyone with Javascript disabled on their browser will not see it as it should be but the odds or percentage of people who have javascript disabled is not worth worrying about.

HTH
