Having read a few more witchhunt sites like Forbes etc :-) I can now confirm that the terms Reserve/Hoard are used throughout all the reports interchangeably

Oh and the figure used constantly throughout these reports is $137 so as I said earlier take up your issue of terms/amounts etc. with them

OH and a final note I just happen to be an Apple enthusiast, of their products but not their business practices :-)

To return to the main issue which is not how much Apple have in the Bank or indeed about sensationalist journalism, which in cases such as this could well be argued to be a good thing anyway.
In any even these big companies have the power to sue the arses of any journalists and newsrags which making libelous claims and even put them out of business should they persist.

So please lets not shoot the messenger.

The fact is that it's time these big multinationals took more responsibility regarding how, where and under what conditions products bearing their name are being produced.
As I said before, repeatedly pleading ignorance is no excuse at all.
They undoubtedly have the power and resources to track their products right back to the original point of manufacture, should they have the will to do so that is.

If they repeatedly get caught with their pants down turning a blind eye to improper, indecent and abhorrent practices, then it is absolutely no one else's fault or responsibility other than their own.

Absolutely. And as I'm sure I've said before, we can't rely on government agencies to make them conform, because they are all in each other's pockets. The only way is to hit them where it hurts, i.e. NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS.

Which is why the only Apples in my house come off a tree.

Bit of illegal working going on here it seems. This where most of that gorgeous fresh fruit and veg we hear so much about in Spain comes from.

A nice variation of "They wouldn't put it in the paper if it wasn't true".

Not a pretty site, I've seen some of it myself and the conditions under which it is produced.
The produce from such places tends to be sadly lacking in flavour due mainly to it's greater reliance on artificial assistance of various means and as for the hygiene or lack of it, well that doesn't bear thinking about.

Up here it's mostly grown under slightly more natural conditions which seems to make quite a difference to the quality.

The perfect story.

It's hard to know what to be outraged by first.

"Africans tortured for British Veg".

"Illegal immigrants take jobs from 5 million unemployed Spanish".

"Money-grabbing Spanish Landlords destroy Europe's only natural desert".

"Spanish polluters choke whales".

"British farmers starved out by cheap Spanish veg imports".

"Spanish farmers cause global warming by lowering the temperature".

"British cheese producers outraged by Spanish buying up all cheesecloth".

"Who's been peeing on my tomatoes ?".

It rivals David Frost's "Nude underage sex-change vicar in 110 M.P.H. mercy dash to Palace corgi".

too often you find the little man being pilloried for not conforming but skirting the multi-nationals for fear of their reaction.

ISTR Walmart have been castigated many many times for their practices but they still keep opening stores.

Perhaps if the buyers inspections were carried out by fewer starry eyed young things impressed at being in a foreign country and more grizzled worldly wise older and experienced then they would see behind the gloss there is always a dark cupboard full of rubbish or dust under the carpet.

Sort of combine Buyers with Health and Safety inspectors ?

Tesco should send their starry-eyed young things to check every farm which supplies them with oranges ? And apples ? And so on ?

It would certainly solve the unemployment problem in Britain.

You didn't by any chance work for the Sun at one time, or did they unfortunately miss out on your undoubted talents ?

I'm sure you could done Murdoch proud.

On the other hand, judging by the way you repeatedly deviate from the topic under discussion, possibly politics could have been your fuerte.

ISTR a couple of years ago there was a TV prog about just that.
The buyers visited UK companies to ensure compliance with their company specns i.e. no dirty eggs, all the same colour, all the same size in the packaging.
No mud on the lettuce, cabbages etc.
Is it small wonder kids don't know where their food comes from

The owners/farmers felt that this generated too much wastage and it was marginal as to whether they made much if any money from the contracts - but didnt argue because they couldnt afford to lose the business.

extrapolate that to buyers/inspectors of plants making clothing for 20p that is sold for £20 - they should be there to ensure the minimum standards are maintained. There is no need in this world for workers to live and work and eat and sleep at the same bench. It all reminds me of when I first went abroad in the 60's and saw a security guard pulling his bed across the doors of a bank in Singapore.......
Surely the world has come on in 50 years
