OK, watch out for this one.
When we were queuing at the gate, they went along with a cardboard device to slide over people's luggage to check that it fits.
They didn't do it to everyone, so maybe it was something they are just trying out.

Similar at Alicante on tuesday morning at bloody 7.30 am except they used those metal contraptions ,can see the scales moving in soon ,mind you I was behind a couple who had two bulky cases and three carrier bags between them ,cant they sodding read 1 pce of luggage only it is in rather large type on their boarding pass which I could clearly see behind them ,then when on plane kick up stink cos they cant find room for their luggage ,sometimes you can't blame airlines for getting tough. If Had a £ for everytime I see this I would be flying free forever and I do a hell of a lot of flying .

Yup. I'd have a rule. Blatantly ignore the rules and you will be turned away as being too thick to travel unattended.
There's a major difference between bending the rules a bit, and ignoring them completely.

Just heard on Breakfast news that Ryanair are now thinking of getting you to take your in hold bags to the aircraft yourself when they would then be loaded on the aircraft to save on baggage handlers.

Todays London Evening Standard.
No frills airline Ryanair is to stop using traditional check-in desks at airports as it moves the service entirely online.
