The nets and Spanish fishing practices seem to be part of the problem:
'I asked Dr Cortes(Gibraltar's Environment Minister) about the current dispute with Spain’s fishermen and the Nature Protection Act 1991: what specifically does it prohibit? The minister stated: “It specifically prohibits the use of seine and gill nets in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. Seabed raking and the use of artificial lights for attracting fish are also illegal under the aforementioned Act. These methods, including drift nets as well as long lines are used by Spanish fishermen in our waters.”'
From David Eade.

Spanish fishermen are well known for breaking the rules including catching immature fish etc. They don't even kill their Tuna correctly, that's why most of what you see for sale has bruised patches on them!

According to the news Gib has gone all our with bunting and flags for the jubilee.

I actually find the rape of the worlds ocean one of the greatest environmental catastrophes facing mankind and I am not being hysterical, to sit back and watch world fish stocks colapse is an absolute travesty, it shows mankind up as the spoilt child it really is and it pains me to say it that I no longer eat fish, hardly a mass campaign I know but for someone who adores fish like I do its hard.

Screw global "warming" its this that the world should be addressing! Off my soap box now.... carry on.

I'd back the UKIP on this one.

http://www.ukip.org/content/ukip-pol...ng-ukip-policy

We previously controlled, then handed over 70% of European fish stocks on a plate for any Tom Dick or Harry to come along and clear them out, simply for the dubious pleasure of joining the EU.
Nothing short of Criminal.
The Norwegians had much more sense, and still get similar EU benefits, if benefits is a fair description.

staying on the fishing kick for a bit longer, as IMHO it is a major factor in the lives of the people of Gibraltar,

we keep being told how much food is wasted every day, hour, minute - but how much of that is fish ?
I have seen my local Alcampo stuffed full of fish, but it is generally fresh - within 24hrs of being landed. What happens to it after it isnt sold. Does it go to the tip, is it turned into dog/cat food.?

does Spain or any other fishing country need to fish as much as they do - except to keep fishermen in a job.?

having spent many years at sea, seen the joy of dolphins, whales and others in displaying their antics I have great respect for all sea creatures, and usually leave a fishmarket with a feeling of sorrow rather than any other emotion.

a friend runs a kiosco outside the local supermarket. At 8.00pm, the girls come out with the perished food for the day in two supermarket trolleys, putting the whole lot into the big contenadores. A truck arrives and two fellows take out all the bin-liners and load up... and drive away.
So, where does it go? Lucky Jim's Dollar-a-Pop restaurant...? The poor n starving...?

Used to be the case in the UK that unused food (well some of it) was sold cheaply to the pig farmers. No idea if that happens in Spain, but it wouldn't surprise me one iota.

I wondered about that when I popped into mercadona one evening at 9.30 pm and the fish counter was stacked high. have actually seen fish that is thawing out though, especially shellfish.

You can see where the problem lies. Spain doesn't recognise Gib's jurisdiction in the territorial waters. See silly map from El Mundo here.
The bit on the left is a no-fishing zone, the large purple triangle is Gib's water and the tiny squiggle on the left of Gib is Spain's call on what is really Gib's water.
¡Que risa!

By the way, I love the map of the island of Alboran on Google. What happened there?

Spain and in particular the PP do not recognise Gibs jurisdiction on anything.
Under the old government tripartite talks were taking place over Gibs future, that is between Spain,UK and Gib.However the PP have rejected this procedure and want to return to bilateral talks, Spain and UK.

At the meeting yesterday between Hague and Margallo it appears that Hague ( and I believe agreed by Margallo ) has stated that the fishing dispute should be sorted out at a local level.
That puts Spain in the position of having to recognise Gibraltar.

The Spanish fishermen have had it removed as it interferes with their nets

Or maybe the GC don't want you to spy on their smuggling operations ?
