Hi Bryony, I wasn't sure if this had been mentioned in the Restaurants thread as well as here, so I plonked for an update on this thread.

Sorry, but I can open the link. Try googling huelvahoy. Here's the first paragraph from the article dated 05/04/14:
"El establecimiento que la cadena McDonald’s construye en Ayamonte abrirá sus puertas casi con toda probabilidad a lo largo del próximo mes de mayo, según ha anunciado esta semana el alcalde de la localidad, Antonio Rodríguez Castillo."

It isn't an exact date in May, however, I am mildly curious to know the location as the article says the premises are being built.

Not noticed any construction in the overflow car park but it may be they have taken one of the empty units in La Plaza and are "constructing" undercover so to speak.

It is really odd but I have never been to any shop in the shopping center except Mercadona for the last 3 years and not been upstairs for about the last 5 years. We worked out yesterday that we watched "Australia" in English at the Cinema before it closed one of the few VO showings. Yet we went to GranPlaza Tavira to the Cinema with our visitors yesterday to avoid the thunderstorms and had coffee and cakes in the food court. The girls visited the clothes shops and Continenti I had a mooch round DeBorla and researched Optimus ( not good news ).

So I think there is a demand for things that could be in Ayamonte/La Plaza but are not, though I am not sure McDs is one of them.

Here it is translated..

I wonder if the 'stable jobs' gained by Mcdo - as stated by our wonderful Mayor, would be at the loss of other jobs in the local resto industry? I'm not sure job wise that its a net gain.. Nor do I see how this positively impacts from Faro to Huelva.... as they both have Mcdo's ... as well as eg in Olhao... Nor is it an attractive environment either IMO! However personally I'm not against it, but not really positive either.

Cut'n'paste from the translation
Property that McDonald's built in Ayamonte open its doors almost certainly over next May, as announced this week the local mayor, Antonio Rodriguez Castillo.

The mayor explained that the fast food chain specializing in and had all the documentation relevant to the premises in question begins operating processing shortly.

From ayamontino City Council has supported the launch of the restaurant because, among other factors, will create stable jobs and be an attractive environment for a population to be around 80,000, from Faro (Portugal) to Huelva.

Castillo Rodríguez, in a press conference where he talked about various projects and investments in the town, also referred to dredge bar Guadiana and water park, expected transactions of which run their course normally.

Similarly, he stressed the tendering of the works of Moreno and Chacon public school, which will have an investment of 24 million euros. "This is a work that has gone through various vicissitudes and by solving that have been along the last few months, which have also participated in the Board and the City Council, the school management and AMPA center."

Newly unemployed in both hotel/restaurant and local government may welcome this opportunity:

I hope so..... lets see. If the McDo does a lot of business that would've gone to the local restos, then there could be a net loss. Thats just a gut feel rather than any business fact.

Where have I heard the last sentence before!! See link - the mayor has some disbelievers!

There must be elections coming soon.

There is work going on in the road behind the overflow carpark bringing services along that road to the front of Monte Sol. The buildings for Mc Donalds are pre fabricated in a factory somewhere and go up very quickly. I think it will be a 'drive thro' and that location would suit.
It is a large area and there might be room for more than just Mc Donalds in the future.

That must explain why there is a demo with whistles and pots and pans every workday morning outside the town hall at 10 am.
