Thanks for the replies.
UPDATE.
I received this via the UK Amazon Community Forum
"Amazon UK can only legally sell ebooks to UK accounts.
As their software gets better they can and will cut off "externals" since Amazon can not break the law. What individuals do is up to them.
If you are downloading via a pc then there are lots of ways that a computer can "hide" where it is through legal and illegal software. It does not change the simple situation that you can and must do whatever you choose to do. Amazon can and must comply with the law.
At least it is clear what the problem is now. You can solve it very easily or find alternative ways of conducting your account.
Please be aware - and this is not meant in anything other than a helpful way - If amazon read your posts they will be obliged to take action. You may wish to delete your posts and continue doing whatever you are doing. You may also wish to go to the HELP pages and look at MIGRATION to see how you can legitimately migrate your account to www.amazon.es or www,amazon.com"
FURTHER UPDATE.
Took our Paperwhite to an internet cafe - all worked fine! So the problem seems to be local to the 3G Wireless Modem in the house and has started following the recent software update on the Paperwhite.
I have a Kindle Touch and that still works fine in the house. We have no landline but a reasonably good wireless signal from Orange and use a TP Link TL MR3420 3G Wireless modem for internet using Masmovil. So I assume the recent software update has some conflict with the modem? I can of course download the books to the PC and transfer them but I would be interested to know if anyone can suggest a possible solution by a change to the configuration of the modem.
Thanks

We have happily been downloading books from Amazon UK for years until last week. We could download samples but not books. Contacted the Kindle Help people and they said a recent software update to certain Kindles was causing a problem. They sent me an Amazon Refurbished Paperwhite (our Paperwhite is 4 years out of warranty) free of charge - impressed with service. However the replacement exhibits the same problem - books queue. I am now being told it may be a "region" problem - see below.
"Is it possible that the real problem is that you are trying to buy and download books from the wrong region?
This is the UK help center and supports ebook sales to the UK
Your, your account, your bank, your card and your kindle must be in the UK to use it.
If you are overseas then you need to be using the relevant Amazon portal (france, italy, germany, spain, etc.) or the www.amazon.com site for rest of world.
{Note: If you are overseas and have been purchasing from the UK up until now one of the security updates of the new software will be what is blocking your purchases.}"
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Thanks

I downloaded the update that occurred several weeks ago and have bought several books since but I decided in the light of your post to check that it was still alright. Successfully downloaded a book a few minutes ago.

I have only ever downloaded to my Kindle from Amazon UK, the only address they have for me is a Spanish address, I do pay with a UK credit card but only because it is the card that was registered with them years ago.

Yes my address is in Spain and stopped using a UK credit card as my bank offered a "Cybershopping" card, much more secure as I leave it charged with only a small balance, topping it up if I buy any big items.

Sometime ago whenever I shopped on Amazon UK , including Kindle, I got a message at the top of the Amazon page "noticing" I am in Spain and suggesting I switched to Amazon.es. Followed the advice and ever since have always shopped across the whole range of Amazon stores startting from the Amazon.es base.

There are two options : "Tienda Kindle" or "Livros en idiomas extranjeros " which also includes Kindle books.

Don't know if this helps you guys but I'm in Aus and used to have major problems buying books for my Kindle from Amazon UK. I only ever use Amazon US now with no problem whatsoever.
