I prefer the Paperwhite though the battery doesn't quite last as long as the basic Kindle. Though it is easy enough to turn the brightness down to compensate.
I also have a UK account but have no problems downloading books in any country I've been in.

I have an old kindle e reader from Amazon UK which is getting a bit long in the tooth.
Is there any problem transferring the books in its memory to a new device if I replace it ?

Your books are 'in the cloud' as it were and will remain available on your Amazon account and can be delivered to multiple devices. I just got a new one and it was automatically registered to my account with the same kindle e-mail address etc.

Well, i'm in the Philippines and have absolutely no problem getting books from Amazon UK. Admittedly 90% are the free ones , but they download via wifi with no problem. My wife has a paperwhite which I logged onto my account and same there. There are thousands of free books available on the web - Project Guttenberg or library genus are just two. Download Calibre and you can convert ebooks into the kindle specific format. If you want more info on getting free books then please PM me.

This programme will convert most formats to other formats, however you do have to be online to use it, it isn't a downloadable app.

My OH has paperwhite. He lost it and got a new one. Deregistered th old one, reregistered the new one with same email address in UK. He has downloaded books in different countries whilst on holiday no bother. The kindle justs acts as if he is in UK

If you register on the Spanish site ( Amazon.es ) and go to books in foreign languages you can get everything you want without any problem. Give it a go

We have happily been downloading books from Amazon UK for years until last week. We could download samples but not books. Contacted the Kindle Help people and they said a recent software update to certain Kindles was causing a problem. They sent me an Amazon Refurbished Paperwhite (our Paperwhite is 4 years out of warranty) free of charge - impressed with service. However the replacement exhibits the same problem - books queue. I am now being told it may be a "region" problem - see below.

You could try buying the book direct from the Amazon site on your PC, or using the Kindle app on a phone or tablet. Once it is in your Kindle library, you should be able to access from any device.

I don't use a Kindle, but I buy from the Amazon site and have it delivered to my iPad.

I did have a problem with my kindle keyboard due to amazon changing the way their online security works. They issued an update a little while ago which has cured it. Never had a problem with my wifes paperwhite - bought locally and is US version. Registered it on my amazon UK account and everything works fine. To be fair . 99% of the books I get are either the freebies from amazon or from library genesis - just download, add to Calibre and transfer to kindle.I haven't bought an ebook from amazon for 4 years! I've downloaded free books from amazon whilst in Dubai, hong kong , France, Canada and USA with no problems.

If being able to download books wherever you are without geoblocking associated with WiFi & Internet then buy the option which includes free 3G. It's a bit more expensive but I've certainly found it worry free downloading wherever I've been using the Whispernet over 3G

Well , I use my UK registered kindle over the house wifi here and have no problem getting books via whispernet. Maybe it's because my amazon account is linked to a UK address - my friends - and to a UK debit card. #G here is far to slow.
