1-Horses...Does anyone keep horses in Spain or even the Alicante area? What do I need to be most aware of? Do you know of any good places to buy horses? Or not!!!!!!
Grazing, feed, shoeing etc.

Hollos, I am just going to reply on this one as a British Instructor who has lived, worked and kept horses in Spain. Many people keep horses here, some badly some very well. Things to consider are - except in the north there is very little grazing, water supply is very important and shelter needed from the sun. There are many excellent livery stables and thousands of bad ones. Generally here roughage is given in the form of straw and alfalfa as hay is very difficult. You can get horse nuts etc., but they are very expensive and most people "go natural" and feed a mixture of oats, barley, bran etc., to suit there horses. These natural foodstuffs are easy to source, good quality and cheap (you can go to the mill and pick your pile if you like !). Horses are generally bedded on shavings as they eat straw. Worms are generally not a problem as they are not eating grass, but there are different problems here like tic fever so you have to keep your horse tick free (using a special wash which keeps them off). Farriers come in two forms - bad and good, the bad ones cold shoe and can even put on mule shoes if not knowledgable and very good ones who hot shoe there are many very good expat farrier here. Feet need extra care from contracted frogs etc., as the ground here is generally hard and they do not get into contact. Also, keeping feet from drying out (sandy ground) is an issue and the best way is when you shower your horse (one upside, great for horse, less grooming for us) you then apply a grease (not oil, that can fry) over the water to trap it in to keep in the moisture.

Most depends on whether you are bringing a horse over with you (thoroughbreds with their thin skins can find the heat tough) or buying one here (you will want too once you have seen one . a pure bred that is !)

Hope this helps, I learnt all this whilst running centres in Seville and on the Costa del Sol... good luck, let me know if you need any more help.

Just reading through quickly, you will probably get some answers, but I feel a lot of these should of been sussed out before agreeing an offer on a house.
Surely you have been to the area and had a look round at the facilities ?)

I find your tone and comments rude and very unfriendly. is this how you want this site to be?

Of course we have done extensive homework. We have lived in Spain , in the area, on and off for a year now. I was looking for friendly timesaving advise from people who are actually living it! I can read a thousand written reports by officials, I can visit the townhall but speaking to individuals who know the pitfalls is invaluable. Is that not what this site is about...support?

I am realy disappointed.
I have just read this thread,to be quite honest I have had to go and have a cup of coffee and a cig before I wrote to you.You sound very angry for some reason, and you appear to be very rude.
I want you to know that I have only been a member of this site for about three weeks, and have found everyone very surportive,If you look at JDR,s thread he has very kindly posted a lot of information there, its free,it just takes a bit of time to look.
I havent yet moved to Spain but already by reading a lot of the posts ect.have already gained a lot of information,I know by having lots of forms ect.to read through is no doupt not the same as when you have to deal with it in practice,Iv set a file up with loads of info, and anything I see on here that I could find useful for the future I make a note on my proccesor.
Everyone is very kind and helpful here, you just need to stop being so angry,I cant believe that if you have lived in Spain on and off for twelve months that you are asking for this info.I mean Im hear in the UK and In three weeks of being a member on this site I know where to go for residency.
Anyway Iv got that off my chest, and honest if you stop being so rude you will get all the support you need. Why are you so angry?

Hi Jayne & Jon

I think something that is very frustrating on this forum at times is that people tend to come here and ask the same questions over and over without previously having a browse through the available threads/topics. Especially the first "READ ME" thread.

I also think that most of us here will agree that JDR is very knowledgable, helpful, patient and sometimes even goes out of his way to help others on the forum. Not to mention repeating himself constantly and reposting information over and over and over again. Personally I think that he is a very patient man, a great Moderator and has a brilliant sense of humour.

And my last comment is that if he had made that same comment to you face to face, I don't think you would've taken as much offense to it as you did.

That was my two pence worth.

Oh and before I forget, welcome to the forum

Hey this is an old thread and a lack of info in the original post added to the problem, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then ;-)

Thanks for the praise though, much appreciated ;-)

Like you say, a search of this forum will turn up most things from "Having a baby in Spain" to "The sounds of the Lake district CD`s 1 to 5" and pictures of the "Beast".

But I think it happens on most forums, that is why Ray wrote his survival stuff....

HOW to SURVIVE the LOUNGE..TIO..AND OTHER PLACES and be a better person.. 2

1. Look and learn for a week before your first posting

2. For your first posting a introduction of yourself is most welcome
and appreciated..be pleasant and un-critical ... People do not respond
to the unknown entity.

3. You may think you are smart ..There's lots here smarter than you
accept this. I am not included in that statement

4. For your first 100 or so postings stick to non-contenuous
issues ... allow time to get your feet under the table

5. Postings can sometimes get quite heated.. Do not threaten
anybody..they may well be 3000 miles away and you will look silly
It is permitted to waggle your cursor across their name in a
violent manner.. NEVER EVER bring up a posters partner in any
type of negative way, particularly if they do not post

6. Mickey-taking is here big time.. its just frivolous chat.. Do not
let it get to you ... have fun with it ..

7. We have all ages, religions, sexual orientation and colors here..
accept them all....

8. If you just returned from Disneyland, wait at least three months before informing us that you, your wife and three small children have decided that you just have to move to Flordia and ask for advise on visas.

9. Any thread about immigration, slavery or pool cleaning must include an allegation of racism within 3 pages.

10. If you are conservative, pro-life, or voted for Bush and say so...be ready for the feeding frenzy. You will be ridiculed, gutted, filleted and hung out to dry... of course this may well all change at the speed of light

13. For your viewing pleasure, always have a mega bucket of Popcorn handy
for when the fight starts.

14. Smilies are there for those dummies who can't get words out ...
Keep their use to a minimum .. one a week ..is good ..

15. Avoid calling regular posters "Cliquey Tossers that jump on newbies" until you get to know them.

16. Any thread that starts out talking about politics or religion will end up talking about oral sex or masturbation. accept this

17. No Karma Whoring

18. No attention whoring

19. No ugly people that think they are attractive are allowed in the Lounge. Ugly people that acknowledge their lack of beauty are more than welcome.

20. If your post begins with "I know this has been posted before" don't post it... it has been posted before.

21. We know the food is different and you miss your pickled fizzle farts, and we know the censoring of cuss words in movies on TV is annoying, and we know there are a lot of religous nutters here..

22. The discussing of vaginal and anal discharges is not recommended

23. Mods can be bated to a certain extent, Don't push it.
Do not try this on Admin.

24. We have a photo gallery for your use, Comments will be made
good and bad...live with it.

25. You can have your own blog here, nobody will read it.

26. Premium membership gets rid of all those bleedin Ads ..well worth it

27. Somebody will help you with an avatar ..just ask.

28. If your unsure on anything ASK... We are just like you ..only better

29. Do not post porn in words or pics. Admin will hurt you ..

30. Ok ..this is written tongue in cheek and for fun ...but will keep you in the ballpark... happy and safe .....
