Default Going home to die

I was talking to a friend the other day about the possibility (necessity?) of having to return to the UK.

He said that it would be like "going home to die".

I agree - that's the way I would see it.

Any thoughts?

I would not say that, I was happy in the UK, I am happy here, but I could be happy in the UK again if we went back.

I have no strong opinions either way.

Although the thought of not being able to communicate in Spanish/English or whatever language needed, and make my self understood when I am at my weakest (ie old, ill, frail) would fill me with dread,.

After seeing someone die in Spain who was baffled with the process of dying and just wanted to go "home" I thought I would not like to die there. However, I realised that I wouldn't want to die anywhere For people to think like that they would have to be quite old. there are alternatives to Spain V UK...unless you are going back to live off benefits!

Better than the racist thread...not sure, although I have given up the will to live with it

It doesn't have to be a morose topic at all, and anyone who says he hasn't thought about it is a liar. I admire Terry Pratchett, the writer, and he has stated publically that when the time is right he wants to sip his last drink in the tranquillity of his own garden.

The trouble that could arise is when you've forgotten where you've hidden it.

If you are by yourself and in a care-centre or a hospital here, old and your bits of Spanish forgotten, the TV blaring a Spanish game-show, apologizing because you've just wet yourself... it probably would have been better to have moved to the UK.
Not much better though.
I'll be staying here I reckon.

Although I know quite a few people who have gone home to die, perversely, I also know quite a few who have come to Spain to die.

They haven't come expecting it to happen immediately, but have arrived with ailments already established, hoping that the warmer climate, friendliness of the people and the famous Mediterranean diet will make their remaining years more pleasant than back home in the hectic and damp UK.

It's difficult to think that one through, no one has ever back from the other side to post their final experiences on this forum, so everything is pure conjecture.

If staying, or arriving, it would be useful to learn sufficient Spanish, as Lennox pointed out, to at least be able to explain the important things, I wouldn't like to be supplied with a slice of bread when asking for a bed pan.

Like most I don't want to die, but it is as inevitable as the sun rising in the East every morning.

I will take my chances and die where I die, I don't see any reason for returning for anything much at all, Spain is my life now.

However, I have told my BH that I want to be buried in England

It would cost your wife around £9.000 for a burial in the UK, 6K for the body transfer and another 3k when there for the burial.

There is repatriation insurance available, but it's not cheap, and the whole process from, or before your body's arrival in the tanatorio is quite awkward to arrange.

I couldn't care less what they do with me after I'm dead - after all I won't know anything about it, will I? Expensive funerals are an even bigger waste of money than expensive weddings, IMO.

Given the choice (and I won't be) I'd like to die so quickly and suddenly that I don't have time to go anywhere.

I remember making grandiose plans for a grand funeral and burial in the family plot. Then a couple of partner changes and other sea changes happened and when I think back now it makes me laugh.

It will be a quick cremation now and my ashes being scattered wherever the person who collects them wishes. We had a row earlier and I took some rubbish down to the Basura to clear the air. If my ashes end up in that green plastic box, I won't know about it, will I?

Can I ask your reasons for wanting to be buried in the UK if Spain is your life?
