Re: Gibraltar Frontier delays
A very successful Catalan business is threatening to leave Spain if things don't change, and move to US where it does most of it's business. I like the bit where he says he'd invest in Gib before he would invest in Madrid!

The PSOE-led Junta de Andalucia has criticised the central Spanish government’s stance on Gibraltar. MÃguel Ãngel Vázquez, the Junta’s spokesman, said the people of Andalusia were the ones who suffered as a result of Madrid’s “tin pot patriotism†over Gibraltar. He said Spain’s Popular Party government should instead be seeking dialogue and negotiation with Gibraltar for the benefit of the Andalusians, in particular the 6,000 Spanish workers employed in Gibraltar. http://www.chronicle.gi/headlines_details.php?id=26832 can't be a real Spaniard  ` |

Out of interest, why is Gibraltar outside the EU Customs Union?

There are many places which have an odd status vis a vis the EU. Some are outside the Customs Union (including Gibraltar, Ceuta and Melilla) others outside the VAT area or exempt from the CAP. Here is a chart showing the relationships. It's complicated. |

VAT is a requirement of being in the Customs Union. The above is correct to the best of my knowledge :o |

Gibraltar does not have VAT, the reason I believe is because a proportion of money raised by VAT is payable to the EU and is used mainly to subsidies the Common Agricultural Fund ( French Farmers ), Gibraltar has no agriculture and it was considered that compulsory payments would be unfair.

Interesting, I didn't realise that there was no VAT. Presumably that's why so many online gambling companies etc have relocated there? That must be a pretty big incentive to stay out of the Customs Union - at least as big as not wanting to subsidise French farmers??
With regard to Online gambling there are some very attractive tax initiatives plus Corporation tax is very low giving more causes for Spain to moan to the EU. |
