Really, which government are you talking about?

The same one you were, you said the Guardia were only acting on the orders of the government, so the Spanish one. Really.

Stalemate? what do you mean by that?

There is only one side that is throwing it's toys out of it's pram. Everyone else is happy with what should be the situation.

Who is suffering?

1) The people who have to cross the frontier regularly, mainly Spaniards who come to Gib to work and their families because their own Government is incapable of finding work for them.

2) Spaniards who work in Gib will also suffer from any down turn in the economy because they are the ones in the service sector.

3) The petrol stations, who have a lot of Spanish investment and workers.

4) The petrol / diesel suppliers, again Spanish.

5) On a normal Sunday and many evenings a lot of Gib residents head to Spain to eat, play golf etc. So Spanish businesses are suffering.

6) Many Gib residents also shop for food and other goods in Spain, but they are aware of the frontier situation and don't bother to go when it's bad, so again it is Spanish businesses that suffer

Gibraltar is actually benefiting because the money is staying in Gib.

The other nationalities ( Ex-pats) who rent in Spain will maybe consider that many hours of queuing is not worthwhile and will consider moving to accommodation in Gib. This will increase property values in Gib whilst further decreasing those in Spain.

I was reading a facebook page, a Spanish one about Gib, and there they were saying that we accuse them of illegal fishing, when we are doing the same in France. They linked to a BBC page, and they are all ranting and raving, pirates etc, usual stuff. However their English can't be very good, they seemed unable to comprehend part of the report.

The French Government says there is nothing it can do to stop the British boats, because they are in French waters perfectly legally.
If you want a good laugh, you can read their childish rants, https://www.facebook.com/Gibraltar.Espannol

Exactly Fred. Everyone is suffering, nobody benefits apart from a few politicians waving their nationalistic flags to show what side they are on and pick up votes. It's just a Rock, for heavens sake!

I think you misunderstand me Pocaloca it is the Spanish who are suffering not the Gib residents. We may be slightly inconvenienced but we are not suffering.

But if you live there, doesn't it make you feel claustrophobic knowing you would have to queue for hours to get out? I'm sure not all the residents are as tolerant as you! Then there are all those poor expats on the CDS who need their weekly Morrisons fix!

I just think it's incredibly selfish of both governments to make people queue for five hours just to score points against each other. The Gib govt knows exactly what will happen when it hassles a fishing boat, they will provoke a response from Spain, etc. etc. and so it goes on.

You are very wrong. It is only the Spanish that cause border queues - never the Gibraltarians. And the majority of people who NEED to cross the border each day (as opposed to those who WANT to) are SPANISH WORKERS.

You really don't know much about this do you?

So what do you suggest Gib turns a blind eye to their illegal activities?

If so what next?

Doesn't sound like it, plus PL seems to think it's the fault of Gib. They don't set out to hassle anyone, they believe the Spanish are fishing illegally so try to prevent it. If there is any hassling, it's the Spanish fishermen deliberately trying to provoke the Llanitos.

"obviously carefully premeditated challenges to our indisputable sovereignty, jurisdiction and control of British Gibraltar Territorial Waters"

I am wondering what the result would be if you should take the Tebbitt Cricket Test !!

From the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo's address to the guests that packed the vast Great Hall at The Guildhall in London last night

“The fact is that after 308 years of uninterrupted British Sovereignty, despite never yielding to sieges and all manner of attempts to undermine us, Gibraltar continues to face aggressive Spanish challenges to the undisputable British sovereignty of British Gibraltar Territorial Waters around the Rock and – for the past five days, but not today, intolerable queues to exit Gibraltar.”

From Spain.

La Linea Ayuntamiento has publicly condemned the “absolutely inhuman” controls implemented by the Spanish government at the border.

Take off your blinkers! The Spanish border queues are ordered whenever the Gibraltar police go out to prevent Spanish fishermen from working. It's tit for tat!

As I said, the Gib govt knows what will happen when it sends out the police boats. Maybe they do it deliberately, to provoke anger against the Spanish govt by the many Spanish workers who are affected?

What on earth do the Gib authorities have to gain from that?

'Take off your blinkers' is very much like the 'Wake Up!!' often used by conspiracy theorists. Do you also think that the moon landings were faked and the planes that hit the World Trade Centre were holograms?
