Which George Orwell novel would that be? The one about how total control is achieved not by conquering resistance but by conquering the will to resist, or the one about pigs and cows? You've got me stumped on either of those.

The daily stream of Gib propoganda is of course 1984 and the idea of an Independent Gib would be the pigs trying to walk in " Animal Farm ".

Great, deal with Apple and then move on to the tax dodging gamblers on Gib.

Did you hear Osborne today promising to clamp down on UK companies using overseas loopholes to avoid paying UK tax.
Care to comment !!

So you approve of Apple moving profits generated by employees working in various EU countriees including UK to a lower tax regime ?

However you consider profits of companies based in Gibraltar who's employees work in Gibraltar and generate those profits in Gibratar to be tax dodging because they pay their taxes in Gibraltar

What a strange thing you are

The announcement by Osborne was that sanctions would be applied to those companies , particularly those in the field of technology who generate sales , income and profits from the UK who should now pay their fair share of UK tax.
Changing location to a " tax haven " will no longer excuse them from UK tax.
In the case of the gambling companies as their income source is the UK then then tax liability will lets hope be changed to the UK.

I know I am probably going to regret this, but can you please explain to me, seeing as it is an 'of course' comparison, how the totalitarian control of mind body and soul in an Orwellian world is the same as Fred posting his links and/or opinion?

You are nearly correct in your analogy of pigs but would it not have been better to have used the flying one?

In 1984 the inhabitants are subjected to a constant stream of I sided propoganda rather like Freds daily posting of selected articles .
Surely there is far more happening in Gib that would be of much wider interest than Fred suggests.

But the inhabitants of both Gibraltar AND this site have the choice and ability to look up alternative news and information on the place! It's everywhere! Fred, and I apologise to Fred for if I am speaking out of turn here, is not the sole source of information. He presents the information he wants to present! We all do that, don't we?
He sees life from his viewpoint, feel free to submit yours but making daft comparisons helps no one.

I doubt if Fred will hold his fingers up and ask you how many he is showing you.

Actually, that last sentence can be construed a bit ambiguously!

Online gambling by Gibraltar based companies is worldwide, not limited to the UK.
That does not deny that the UK is an important market.

In fact the first employees in that industry I met were Malaysians employed by Victor Chandler ( now Betvictor ) for their language skills.

Victor Chandler was the first of the betting companies to set up in Gib and it was an easy logical move because they had no High Street presence in UK.

I notice no one is complaining about the insurance that is written in Gibraltar which forms a substantial slice of the UK vehicle market

Oh dear more bad news for te UK first referred to in post 1841

BET365 CONFIRMS GIB EXPANSION
Bet365 has confirmed that is relocating its international remote gambling operations to the Rock where it has had a presence for seven years.

The privately owned firm will be bring over its sports book team in what is part of a corporate restructure from its Stoke headquarters.
The company confirmed to the Chronicle that the changes are effective now and it is using Gibraltar as its licensing hub.

Yesterday Financial Services Minister Alber Isola welcomed the news which is expected to see up to 150 new jobs on the Rock as a result without redundancies. Its offices in Stoke employ about 2,000 staff and the board headed by John and Denise Coates remain in Britain.

The company says it purchased more space in its Waterport offices and the companies Chief trading Office will be based there.Â

With its entire world-wide transactional remote gambling business now licensed and located in Gibraltar the company is looking to new markets adding to licences it already holds in Spain, Italy, UK Australia and Denmark.Â

Gibraltar’s captive insurance industry has grown apace in recent years. With its unique position in Europe, responsive regulator and innovative approach to new captive forms, it has become an attractive choice.

Over the past 20 years Gibraltar’s insurance industry has expanded from just 12 licenced insurers in 1993 to the present 56 licensed insurers currently writing new business. In 2011 the total gross premium income written by insurance companies in Gibraltar was £3.2 billion and these companies held assets of over £7.5 billion. Gibraltar motor insurers currently write 10% of the total UK motor market.

Household names such as Arriva, Brit Insurance, Severn Trent, and Tate & Lyle have all chosen Gibraltar as a domicile for their European Union (EU) captives. In recent years Bermudan insurers Arch, Transatlantic Re and XL Insurance have established insurance companies on the Rock.

A growing insurance domicile

How will they cope with the announcement at the Tory conference that companies who do business in the UK must pay tax in the UK.

(VIDEO: Â Audio of Philip Hammond's address to the Gibraltar Reception, Conservative Party Conference 2014)

The Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the Conservatives look forward to another 300 years of British Gibraltar. Delivering an address to the Gibraltar Reception at the Conservative Party Conference, Mr Hammond referred to the Spanish border delays as "particularly harsh", and suggested that the European Commission may take legal action against Spain if it fails to act on the EC's recommendations to ease traffic flow.

To cheers from the audience, the Foreign Secretary said Gibraltar would never be sold out by a Conservative Government.

Philip Hammond said the British Government will fight hard to ensure Gibraltar is included in EU aviation legislation. He said Gibraltar's inclusion is set out in the EU Treaties, and no amount of wishful thinking by Spain can change this.
