Oldest Wingwalker In The World To Fly Round The Rock

Tom Lackey, a 94-year-old grandfather, will achieve one of his remaining ambitions when he flies around the Rock of Gibraltar next Friday 10 October. Tom will be strapped to the top wing of a vintage Boeing Stearman biplane.

The fearless grandfather currently holds several Guinness World Records. He is the oldest man to do a loop-the-loop on the wing of an aircraft which he did when he was 86; the oldest man to cross from Dover to Calais and back on the wing of an aircraft (when he was 93) and the oldest man to wingwalk across the Irish Sea.

The former builder from the West Midlands did his first wingwalk to raise money for charity following the death of his wife, Isabel who had served in the RAF and whose photograph he always carries.

Since then he has repeated the wingwalking stunt many times and has raised over £1m for charity.

Spanish fighter jets illegally invade British airspace over Gibraltar

SPANISH fighter jets illegally entered UK airspace to fly “across the bows” of a British airliner in a “reckless and dangerous” stunt over Gibraltar.
By: Marco Giannangeli
Published: Sun, October 5, 2014

Gilbraltar airspace invaded by Spanish fighter jetsThe incident is being investigated by the Foreign Office [GETTY]

The incident, being investigated by the Foreign Office, happened as the Monarch flight carrying passengers from Manchester was making its delicate approach on to the Rock, one of the world’s trickiest landings.

Last night a senior Tory MP called on Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond to send Spain’s Ambassador to Britain, Federico Trillo, “packing back to Madrid”.

The Sunday Express has learned the passenger jet’s captain reported seeing the two aircraft less than half a mile away and air traffic controllers at Gibraltar International Airport noticed “two dots” on their radar just before 10.30am on September 19.

Both jets, thought to be Eurofighter Typhoons, were clearly in Gibraltar airspace without permission but attempts to communicate with them were ignored.

Last night Gibraltar’s outraged government said the “intolerable” incident marked a new phase in Spain’s deliberate flouting of British sovereignty.

It is intolerable that Spanish military aircraft are now not only infringing our airspace but also behaving in a reckless and dangerous manner

A government spokesman said: “Spanish vessels already regularly violate the sovereignty of our waters. It is intolerable that Spanish military aircraft are now not only infringing our airspace but also behaving in a reckless and dangerous manner.”

While no commercial airliner has ever crashed while landing at Gibraltar, it is widely regarded as having one of the world’s top 10 most challenging runways, with pilots having to contend with strong winds, the 1.400ft Rock of Gibraltar and the tight envelope of British airspace.

Last night retired pilot Chris Hammond said: “I used to go there quite regularly. It’s a restricted airfield, which means only specially cleared pilots are allowed to fly there.

“It presents a challenging approach, especially when wind conditions mean pilots have to make an easterly approach.

“You need to go inside the harbour and only half if it is British airspace and you are not allowed to stray into Spanish airspace. Then you have to make a last-minute sharp 90 degree turn to the right. That happened less than a mile and half from landing.

“All your attention is focused on the approach and the last thing you need is to see two unexpected jets where they’re not supposed to be. The real question in the pilot’s mind would have been what they were going to do next.”

Andrew Rosindell MP, chairman of the parliamentary Overseas Territory group, said: “My committee is com-pletely shocked by the weakness of the Foreign Office in addressing the Spanish issue and its failure to tackle what Madrid is doing. We are pussyfooting around while Spain is running rings around us. It is outrageous that Spain continues to behave in such an irresponsible and bullying fashion.

“Spain refuses to let British military jets fly over Spanish airspace on the way to Gibraltar even though they are partners in Nato, yet they think it’s fine to enter British airspace illegally and potentially distract an airliner as it is trying to safely land on the Rock.

“It’s time that the British Government sent the Spanish Ambassador packing back to Madrid. We are fed up with the bullying and intimidation from Spain, and it’s time we showed we are no longer prepared to put up with it.”

Mr Trillo, Spain’s ambassador to Britain since 2012, has been formally summoned to the Foreign Office on three occasions in the past 12 months over repeated Spanish incursions into British waters around Gibraltar and massive delays for drivers at the border caused by heavy-handed Spanish frontier guards.

Last night a Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident on September 19. We are reassured that there was no risk to safety caused by the activity of the jets.

“We are continuing to examine the incident to ascertain whether it was within the lawful right of passage.

Garcia Exposes Spanish Bullying To Lib Dem Conference In Glasgow

Monday, 06 October 2014 13:17

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia has told an audience of Liberal Democrat politicians in Glasgow that Spain continues to bully and harass Gibraltar by land, air and sea. This followed the news that two Spanish fighter jets had come close to a commercial airliner in the airspace above Gibraltar.

Sir Graham Watson, who replied on behalf of the guests, called upon Liberal Democrats to support Gibraltar in Europe, on issues with which he was very familiar. He reminded those present that the highest Liberal Democrat vote in the European elections, 67%, had been in Gibraltar.

The Government delegation in Glasgow also includes the Minister for Tourism Neil Costa and the Minister for Culture Steven Linares.

Dr Garcia addressed delegates during the traditional Gibraltar Government reception in the Liberal Democrat party conference. Those present included Members of the House of Commons and of the House of Lords.

The Deputy Chief Minister outlined the problems at the border and explained in some detail the delays which he said were deliberate and illegal. He said that Gibraltar had completed the recommendations made by the European Commission within six months and that Spain had failed to meet the deadline.

There were delays of over an hour to leave a Gibraltar during half of August, he said, which was a peak month. September had seen lengthy queues to come into Gibraltar as well as to get out. The peak queuing time in September was four hours, on the 11th which was the day after National Day.

Dr Garcia also explained that incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial waters continued almost as a matter of routine and that this was totally unacceptable. He said that some were more serious than others but added that Spanish state vessels had entered Gibraltar waters on 112 occasions in August and 133 in September. He said that more needed to be done to put an end to this.

He also accused the Spanish Government of continuing to undermine Gibraltar's position in the European Union, particularly over civil aviation matters.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that this was his first visit to Scotland since the Referendum and explained that the will of the Scottish people were and had to be paramount. He regretted that other Governments in Europe had not learnt from this lesson in democracy.

Lidington Condemns Spanish State Vessel’s “Dangerous Maneouvering”

Monday, 06 October 2014 17:32

An incident yesterday afternoon involving the Spanish state research vessel Ángeles Alvariño is being treated as a “serious incursion” by the Foreign Office.

The vessel entered BGTW off Europa Point and was seen off by the GDP, RGP and Royal Navy. There are unconfirmed reports that the vessel managed to briefly deploy a sonar probe.

The Minister for Europe, David Lidington, earlier called the Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Gonzalo de Benito, to express his “grave concern”.

Mr Lidington said: “The irresponsible actions and dangerous manoeuvring of this vessel were not only unlawful but also presented a significant risk to the safety of Royal Navy personnel at sea. Under no circumstances should Spanish vessels be provoking a situation that could result in serious injury or a fatality.”

The Foreign Office repeated that the waters around Gibraltar are indisputably British and reaffirmed its commitment to take whatever action it considers necessary to “uphold British sovereignty and the interests of Gibraltar, its people, its security and economy.”

A statement concluded: “The British Government takes very seriously any attempt by Spain to exert authority or control within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters and considers such incursions as a violation of UK sovereignty. However, the legal fact of the United Kingdom’s sovereignty over British Gibraltar Territorial Waters is not affected by such violations.”

New Gibraltarian Cookbook On Sale Tomorrow

Monday, 06 October 2014 17:02

As from tomorrow, a new Gibraltarian recipes cookbook will be on sale both locally and online. Justin Bautista, creator of Gibraltar’s recipe website, mamalotties.com, has published a Gibraltarian-inspired cookbook with selected recipes. The book includes local dishes as well as some exclusive family recipes not found on the website. The cookbook will be available at local bookshops such as Gibraltar Bookshop and WH Smith and can also be purchased online at Amazon.co.uk.

The 160-page cookbook shares local recipes with a brief introduction to some of the commonly known dishes.

Justin said: “Being such a small place, Gibraltar’s food culture is under-appreciated so I wanted to have something that could be shared with any generation. Recipes are ever changing and Gibraltar’s recipes are no exception, the food is very similar to that of Italian, Spanish and Maltese cuisine but I wanted to have something that was OURS and something that showed the world, ‘this is Gibraltarian cuisine, come and try it!’ Who knows, there could soon be a Gibraltarian food revolution on the way.”

The book will have recipes such as Rolitos, Menestra, Torta de Acelga, Pollo al Ajillo and, of course, Gibraltar’s famous Calentita.

UK Ambassador on unprecedented visit as tensions rise ahead of UN

by Brian Reyes

Britain’s ambassador to Spain was despatched to Gibraltar yesterday to accompany a senior Foreign Office official on a two-day visit that signals the British Government’s growing discontent with Spain’s stance toward the Rock.

This is the first time that a serving British ambassador to Madrid has travelled to Gibraltar, at least in modern times, according to The Convent.

Ambassador Simon Manley played down the significance of his visit and told reporters: “I don’t think you should read too much into it.”

But the presence in Gibraltar of Britain’s ambassador to Spain is certain to rankle with authorities in Madrid. ( Good )

You recently posted on this thread that Arron Banks ‘Having failed to be selected as a candidate for the Tories he buys the opportunity from UKIP.’ I asked from where you got this information and you posted back ‘It’s called the news’.

I asked you what news, where, and drew a blank. Twice.

I can only assume this is another piece of your ‘one sided propoganda that comes from the unofficial minister of misinformation.’

Gibraltar University Set for September 2015 Launch

Tuesday, 07 October 2014 14:16
Plans were announced this morning by the Government outlining the hotly awaited Gibraltar University manifesto commitment. Education Minister Gilbert Licudi, flanked by the Chief Minister and his working team for the project, confidently insisted that the institute for Higher Education would be ready to open its doors by September 2015.

Faculties at the University are to include a School of Health Studies that will tie in with the current undergraduate degree programme available to a number of GHA professionals, in a collaboration between the Gibraltar Government and Kingston University.

The University, which is aiming to attract international students to Gibraltar, will also offer Sports Science as a research based faculty that will see collaboration with the UEFA research programme. Courses will also be available in the areas of Business, including specialisms in Accounting and Finance, Law and ICT. Minister Licudi commented that the University will offer diplomas in Gibraltar tax and Law, which will prove beneficial to graduate students who return from the UK with only the knowledge of UK Law or tax. Finance courses will be based around a collaboration with the London School of Economics, one of the World’s top institutions for Business.

Other subjects to be offered are Tourism and Hospitality, which will include a kitchen and restaurant, and the School of Life Sciences and Gibraltar Mediterranean Studies. This course will be predominantly research driven and doctoral and post – doctoral based. Minister Licudi insisted that they envisioned this niche area attracting international students. gib uni 2

Licudi was adamant that the school would also be presented as an institute for professional development and continuing education, offering courses to those in both the public and private sectors. This would see the University offer short term courses in relevant fields to Gibraltar, including e gaming, compliance, and ACCA accounting.

The Minister went on to suggest that they envisioned the institution, which following its inception will look to provide accommodation for approximately 120 students, would also develop as a language centre, acting as a gateway for international students to learn English. He added that Europe has a huge market for language centers.

The Gibraltar University, to be situated by Europa Point on the site of the former St. Christopher’s school, will depend on collaborations other institutions, with the Minister looking to sign MOUs with other renown institutions. The Government most recently signed one with the University of Seychelles, and are looking to build a joint masters programme in marine science.

As plans move forward quickly, a website and prospectus are currently being put together. The working group for the project, consisting of Education Director Joey Britto, Darren Grech, Dr. Darren Fa of the Gibraltar Museum, Kevin Pizarro for the GHA and Chris Riddel, the director of projects for the Government, will look to commence staff recruitment, most likely in the new year. The project will see the creation of a spectrum of job opportunities, from administrative staff to cleaners.

Both Minister Licudi and the Chief Minister stressed their intention to develop and progress the University, over time. They noted that more buildings in the area would likely be developed into further student accommodation, as the University grows.

Responding to questions on how the Gibraltar University will look to develop a reputation as a world-renowned institution, Minister Licudi compared the endeavor to the success of Gibraltar’s eGaming market. He noted that Gibraltar did not become the World’s no.1 jurisdiction automatically but that over time standards were developed. He stressed the importance of setting high standards and employing top professionals.
