US politicians present formal Gibraltar 'Self Determination' motion
Author: GBCDate: 21 September 2014 at 08:52
Seven senior and influential US politicians, led by North Carolina Republican Congressman Goerge Holding, have presented a motion to the House of Representatives calling for support for Gibraltar's right to Self Determination. The motion recalls Gibraltar's importance as a military base during WWII, and continuing use during NATO operations in the Middle East.
The motion notes that Gibraltarians have chosen, through two Referenda in 1967 and 2002, to remain part of Britain, and recalls how important Gibraltar has been as a strategic military base to the interests of US overseas interests, ever since 1801.
The motion honours the Contribution that Gibraltar has made to advancing America's military interests, and expresses the view that the rights of Gibraltarians should always be imperative in any discussion over the Rock's future.

Again, this does not tell the full story.
"GIBRALTAR’S right to self-determine its own status as a British overseas territory should be formally supported by Congress, senior US politicians said."
Why did the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation leave out "as a British overseas territory", Fred ?
Is Gibraltar First Minister Picardo following the wise words of Alex Salmond that there is more than one way of gaining independence, and would this show that the US supports it ?

Re: Gibraltar
No Fred, the security of the border between Italy and Switzerland is governed by the Schengen Agreement, not tobacco prices. Although Switzerland is not in the EU, it has signed up to Schengen.
If you got what you wanted, i.e Gibraltar, through Britain, signed up to Schengen you could stand on the Rock and have the same view of traffic coming over the border without customs and immigration checks as you noted, and envied on the Swiss/Italy border.
Afterwards you could then go and stand on the White Cliffs of Dover and also see traffic coming and going without customs or immigration checks as well, couldn't you ?
Doesn't bear thinking about - but that doesn't bother the selfish Gibraltarians, does it ?

The GBC broadcasts to the people of Gibraltar those same people who voted 99+% to be associated with the UK.
Therefore I am sure the GBC's audience are well aware of the facts unlike some of the dumber member of society.
However certain sections consider Gib to be a colony and not aSelf Governing Overseas Territory
I am well aware that Spain and the UN class us as a colony.
I was not aware that the Yanks also appear to, and this bill seeks to correct this anomaly.

Re: Gibraltar
My reference to tobacco prices was to point out that the Gibraltar Government refuses to equalise, in any way, the price of cigarettes with that of it's neighbour (€1.90 in Gib, €4.80 in Spain). This price difference cannot but fail to attract smugglers to the crossing point and choke the queues.
Even the Governor of Gibraltar has now come out and said that everyone is making too much of the restrictions on the border.

Cheap International Tobacco-holiday cigarettes price comparison
Even the site you quoted gave a variation in price for Malboro in Gibraltar down to €1.50
Not me distorting prices.

UK DELAYS GAMING TAX LAW AS CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUE LOOMS OVER CASE
by Dominique Searle
A decision by Sajid Javid, the UK’s minister for Culture, Media and Sport, to suspend the implementation of a remote gaming tax for a month following a challenge from Gibraltar based gaming companies, sent ripples through the industry yesterday. It has raised hopes that the UK Government is beginning to appreciate that its ‘point of consumption tax’ law may be flawed.

Gibraltar has a strong future as a base, says the new Forces commander
by JOE GARCIA
Gibraltar has a strong future as a British military base. That is the view of the new Commander British Forces, Commodore Andie McGhie.
He could not be better suited for his new job, having been Captain Faslane Flotilla, responsible for all UK submarines. And as everyone knows the ability of Gibraltar to handle nuclear-powered submarines is a strong point in the military capabilities of Gibraltar.
