Re: Gibraltar
It's high time someone pulled the plug on all this nonsense. Gibraltar is a place full of crooks, Spanish people dressed in British army uniforms for the tourists and those ridiculous Spaniards dressed as London policemen from 40 years ago.
The few people living there are an embarrassment to the rest of us.
A million of us expats in Spain would love to wave goodbye to the lot of them.

No 6 counters Spanish tobacco propaganda
Date: 15 August 2014
Number Six Convent Place has moved to counter the tide of anti-Gibraltar propaganda in the Spanish Press by asserting that more tobacco smuggling goes on in the Port of Algeciras than via the Gibraltar frontier, which only accounts for nine percent of total tobacco seizures in Spain. Meanwhile the Spanish press is misconstruing an incident where a journalist was pelted with rocks, saying it happened in Gibraltar, when in fact it was in La Linea.

Re: Gibraltar
Spain seeks to ‘criminalise’ Gibraltar and the Campo with tobacco claims
The Gibraltar Government has called on Spain to stop trying to ‘criminalise’ Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar with ‘sensationalist’ data about tobacco smuggling.
In a statement, it said data provided by the Spanish government’s representative in the province of Cádiz, Javier de Torre, ‘contradicted’ statistics from the Spanish Tax Agency in a bid to make the problem look worse than it is.
Sr de Torre was quoted saying that 60% of all tobacco seizures in Spain came from the Campo de Gibraltar, a figure that had been used earlier in the week in a statement from the Treasury Ministry in Madrid.
According to the Gibraltar Government, Spain’s own official statistics show the figure of tobacco seizures at the border between Gibraltar and La Línea account for 9% of total seizures in Spain, while those in the Campo de Gibraltar area - which also includes the port of Algeciras - make up 21% of the total.
The Gibraltar Government said this was ‘very far’ from the figure ‘brandished’ by Sr de Torre.
“The Government of Gibraltar therefore calls for less sensationalism and more rigour in the publication of statistics and an end to the attempt to criminalise Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar,” it added.
The Gibraltar Government was also critical of a provocative claim that states the volume of cigarettes imported into Gibraltar must mean that either there was smuggling, or every resident smoked a carton every 20 minutes.
The claim was repeated many times in Spain this week, including by Joaquín González-Herrero, a Spanish official from the European Anti-Fraud Office.
But the government said that analysis was flawed because it ignored the fact that 12m people visited Gibraltar every year, and that shops here also supplied ships, yachts and cruise liners.
The government also noted that the Spanish authorities did not provide a breakdown of cigarette seizures in other parts of Spain, focusing only on Gibraltar and the Campo.
“This is clearly designed in order to hide the fact that more instances of smuggling occur through Algeciras port than via La Linea's frontier with Gibraltar,” it said.
“The only thing achieved by publishing this partial and incorrect data, and thus making Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar area into the main focus of tobacco smuggling in Spain, is to criminalise both territories and the residents thereof unfairly.”

Guardia Civil detained in Gibraltar after boat chase
Four Spanish 'Guardia Civil' officers were detained in Gibraltar. Late Monday evening a Guardia Civil launch was chasing a Spanish fast boat in waters near Gibraltar.
The pursuit continued into Gibraltar harbour and ended with both the fast boat and the Guardia Civil launch being grounded in Gibraltar port area by 'Harbour Views'.
Once on land, the two men on the fast launch raced for cover. The Guardia Civil rushed after them. Shots were heard, it is claimed.
The Guardia Civil officers were taken to Police HQ.
Gibraltar police also arrested the two men on the fast launch and took them away.
The two vessels have been seized.
The Gibraltar police said this was a 'very serious' incident.
Eyewitnesses claim that several shots were heard, but it was not clear how many.

Government files complaint against Spanish OLAF adviser
Author: GBC
Date: 18 August 2014 at 08:18
The Government of Gibraltar has filed a complaint against an OLAF adviser for having broken confidentiality over details of last week’s report on tobacco smuggling.
The complaint is made against Mr Joaquin Gonzalez-Herrero who last week gave an interview to Spanish newsagency EFE. The Government argues that his interview was ‘prejudicial’ for Gibraltar and they feel this is a breach of OLAF’s code and the EU’s own codes.
Mr Gonzalez-Herrero is not part of the directorate that investigated Gibraltar, but rather an adviser in a parallel directorate, but OLAF's procedures require that complaints of this nature be directed to the Director General of the organisation.
Last week Mr Gonzalez-Herrero gave a lengthy interview to Spanish newsagency EFE. This was presented in Spain generally as the position of an OLAF official.
The Government says the comments made by Mr Gonzales-Herrero last week were not prompted by any need to advance the recommendations in OLAF's Final Report and will have been widely read in Gibraltar.
In the circumstances, the Government considers that, in respect of such a sensitive matter as the OLAF investigation, which may require consideration of possible prosecutions, it is highly irregular for there to have been interviews granted by an OLAF adviser commenting on the OLAF Final Report.
The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo says Gibraltar is acting properly and responsibly upon receipt of the OLAF Final Report. He says the manner in which Mr Gonzalez-Herrero's interview has been presented is prejudicial for Gibraltar, and it is important for the Government to highlight the breaches of OLAF's code and the EU's own codes.

Australian magnate proposes tunnel to link eastside to town centre
A tunnel connecting the eastside project to the doorstep of the City Hall at John Mackintosh Square are amongst the ideas being proposed to the Government in the batch of proposals dropped off at No 6 Convent Place yesterday as the deadline for general submissions closed. A tender process has yet to be held.
The suggestion comes in a £599,032,000 ($1 billion) plan submitted by a locally resident investor who is part of one of Australia’s wealthiest family dynasties
Gibraltar Chronicle - The Independent Daily First Published 1801
N.B. Spain has already complained to the EU about the Eastside Project and the complaints been dismissed.

MARIANO RAJOY Y EL CUENTO DE GIBRALTAR
By Rafael Rossello Cuervas-Mons
