TREATY MAY NOT SOLVE AMBULANCE ISSUE
Friday, January 19, 2024 - 11:23The suggestion that a patient in an ambulances can somehow be equated to cargo in an articulated lorry is one that will raise eyebrows given the crude nature of the comparison. However, this is exactly how Spain has categorised ambulance patients from Gibraltar heading for medical facilities in the neighbouring country.EMERGENCY
The position at the moment is that GHA emergency ambulances are allowed to cross into Spain only in life or death situations. However, transfer ambulances taking patients for medical treatment or investigations, whether operated by the GHA or by St John, are not permitted to enter Spain.

Re: GIBRALTAR 2024
Whilst Gibraltar has good medical services some equipments and treatments are very expensive for the small population size, therefore it is more economical to subcontract the service.
Gib has very recently purchased a MRI scanner bringing such scans onboard. Now they are checking men for prostrate problems widening the use of the MRI scanner thus making it more viable.
Some cancer treatments are subcontracted to Spain whilst others to the UK.
During the recent covid lockdown my late wife had cancer treatment in Spain and also in the UK at the Royal Marsden. All paid for by Gibraltar.
Brain sugery is carried out at an Hospital in Cadiz, the cost of employing a brain surgeon would be unrealistic for the requirements of Gibraltar.

Because Gibraltar pays for these services

Recently de-classified documents previously held by the Foreign Office show that the UK and Spain had planned to host a bilateral meeting of the Brussels Process in 1992 and then in 1993, and diplomats even drafted a press release on the result of the meeting.
The encounter was to be held between then Europe Minister Tristan Garel-Jones and Spanish Foreign Minister Javier Solana.
However, Mr Garel Jones was unable to persuade the then Chief Minister, Joe Bossano, to attend as part of the UK delegation, something which disappointed the Foreign Office.
The meeting never took place.
Jonathan Sacramento has been at the National Archives, and brings us this report.

Barbary Macaque that climbed over frontier fence remains at large in La Linea

Re: GIBRALTAR 2024
The Barbary macaque who crossed over into Spain earlier in the week and was captured yesterday, is expected to be released ahead of the weekend.
The animal is being looked after at a safe location in the upper rock.
Camera shy and likely exhausted from his ordeal. The male macaque is now being observed and looked after. He's eating but not much. While we were filming him, there wasn't much interaction, the animal weary of his new visitors.
He won't be held for long and in the coming days will be reintroduced into the wild and rejoin his group.

Home sweet home - Sir Kingsway, the macaque who went to La Linea, is back in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
He was released after receiving medical treatment and being microchipped following his big adventure.

Dear Fred
The strategic importance of Gibraltar to the UK was brought to the fore again in the last 24 hours with the unexpected arrival of the British Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey who visited HMS Diamond which had recently docked in Gibraltar having been active in the Red Sea. The Type 45 Destroyer faced three separate Houthi attacks, during which she successfully destroyed nine drones using her Sea Viper missile system and guns. The warship, one of the Royal Navy’s most advanced, docked in Gibraltar to be restocked and resupplied, with fresh ‘victory marks’ on her flanks, depicting the nine downed drones. Minister Heappey said "HMS Diamond has played a vital role defending freedom of navigation, saving innocent lives, and protecting merchant shipping from illegal Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. It was a pleasure to visit the ship and her crew while they were alongside in Gibraltar. I am hugely thankful for British Forces Gibraltar’s support for HMS Diamond”. The Ministry of Defence is committed to investing in British Forces Gibraltar as one of Ministry of Defence’s Global Hubs.

Gibraltar has been removed from Financial Action Task Force's grey list together with Barbados, United Arab Emirates and Uganda.
Kenya and Namibia join it and Iran and the Republic of Korea are on a watchlist

HMS Diamond in Gibraltar
The recent visit to Gibraltar by Defence Minister James Heappey is a timely reminder that whatever the Foreign Office may agree with the EU about Gibraltar, the Ministry of Defence still has plenty of skin in the game. This is how it should be.
STRATEGIC
The arrival in Gibraltar of HMS Diamond, direct from active service in the Red Sea, has also drawn attention to the strategic location of Gibraltar and its continuing value to the armed forces of the United Kingdom. That message was reinforced further by Mr Heappey’s unexpected arrival which was not officially announced in the usual way
