Following the release of the EU withdrawal agreement, the Spanish foreign ministry in Madrid has come out saying that the Spanish claim to Gibraltar remains and that the co-sovereignty plan will be put forward in the next phase of negotiations.

The UK Government insisted yesterday that it will not exclude Gibraltar from negotiations on the future relationship between the UK and the European Union, after Spain demanded a veto on the next phase of the Brexit negotiations even before the divorce deal was rubber-stamped.Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said Spain wanted the withdrawal text to make clear that future negotiations on ties between Brussels and post-Brexit Britain were separate from those on Gibraltar’s future relationship with the EU, which he said must be first agreed by London and Madrid. “Future negotiations on Gibraltar are separate negotiations. And that is what needs to be made clear,” Mr Borrell said.
“Until it is clear … we will not be able to give our agreement.”

Unlike NI all the time we have been in the Common Market / EU we have had a hard frontier
However we have never resorted to shooting, bombing or kneecapping our neighbours.We just get on with life trading across the frontier, inviting workers across plus exchanging medical cases, schooling etc.
Prior to having this hard frontier it was closed!! on our neighbours side.

This may appear to be a silly question, but I know that 99% of Gibraltarians do not want to be absorbed as part of Spain.

Experience? So you can remember what it was like when it was part of Spain over 200 years ago. If so I am even more impressed.

No, of course they wouldn't, but my question was why not. "We don't want to" is an inadequate answer as far as I am concerned.

Prejudice in world politics.

Yes, I am well aware of the subjective, historic and personal reasons, but my question put another way, is what are the objective reasons for not wanting to be a part of Spain, like higher taxes (I assume).
Surely, freedom of movement must be an improvement over the current border situation, which is something the UK could lose.
