For politicians in high-tax countries, "unfair tax practices" mean "lower taxes than we have", or sometimes simply "no income-tax". Remind me, Fred: does Gib levy Income Tax? We don't have any here in Cayman, but we have plenty of consumption-taxes, which of course are "unfair". Sigh.

EU offers Gib a ‘safeguard from Spain’ - Garcia

A UK exit from the European Union could hand Spain “free reign” to do what they like with the Gibraltar-Spain border, the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia said.

With a UK Referendum on whether to sever ties with the European Union to take place by the end of 2017, it raises the question of how a UK exit would impact on Gibraltar.

The view of the Gibraltar Government is that the future of Gibraltar is inextricably linked to the EU, not least for economic reasons as should the Rock be excluded from the single market it would ‘clearly be damaging’ for Gibraltar’s economy and prosperity. But this would be compounded by any potential action Spain could take at the border.

Poland takes Gib off its tax haven black list

Poland has removed Gibraltar from its schedule of countries and territories that it considers to be non-cooperative tax havens, the latest in a string of countries to do the same.

The move means Gibraltar companies have been freed from previously held restrictions when doing business with Polish companies.

It follows the steps taken by the Government of Gibraltar to ensure compliance with international standards and to extend its network of tax information exchange agreements

'Sold a duff' Governor of Gibraltar quits after UK fails to stand up to Spain aggression

THE GOVERNOR of Gibraltar has quit his post over tensions with the Foreign Office about the way Britain was dealing with Spanish aggression against the Rock, the Sunday Express has learned.

His tenure has seen the ramping up of Spanish aggression against Gibraltar, with illegal border controls causing havoc on the tiny territory, and a increase in illegal maritime incursions – as many as 245 over a two-month in 2014.

Last night sources close to the Sir James who, as a Royal Marine, became second in command of Nato forces in Afghanistan, said he felt he had been “sold a duff” after increasing friction with the Foreign Office made it clear the role would just be ceremonial.

However one close source said last night: “When he was invited to become Governor, he assumed it was because of his military career. He was very much of a mind that the Royal Navy’s presence should be increased in Gibraltar, and that Gibraltar’s reaction to Spanish incursions should be more robust.

“In the event, he was met with increasing frustration by the way the Foreign Office dealt with the Spanish question.”

He added:“Developing policy in a London office 1,000 miles away from Gibraltar needs a constant dose of reality and independent judgment from the coal face

I am not the only MP who feels Gibraltar is being sacrificed over the Government desire for EU reform. But appeasing Spain has only added fuel to Spain's fire. What's needed is for the door to be shut firmly in Spain's face.

I wonder how many in Gibraltar know of the debt they owe Portugal.
In july 1940 when the UK evacuated the civilian population 2500 Gibraltarians were given safe haven in Maderia well away from the dangers of war.

There again maybe the people of Madeira owe a debt of gratitude to the Gibraltarians.

History of the Chipulina Family

"In fact Madeira was basically a tourism orientated economy, and the advent of the 'Gibraltinos', as the evacuees were called, was a godsend to them, spending money and filling hotels which would otherwise have remained empty and closed because of the war."

Also the foreign office arranged an English school and teachers.

There were other options and some kids were sent to Jamaica.
