Gas conversion

We will do this when we have problems with the boiler......
If you call ADA and speak to Antonia - she has the information. I've lost the number though. But you can find it easy. Antonia also has info about changing to gas - see previous post above (57)
Good luck,
Jon

we have done exactly this and envisage saving quite a lot! Antonia from ADA contacted someone on our behalf. He came that afternoon, with a cylinder and changed the jets and gave us a gas safety certificate (essential) then a form to take down to the gas office near the market where we registered for gas bottles (which you can purchase anywhere).
The tricky part is trying to inform the mains gas people that you wish to cancel the contract - you need a fluent Spanish speaker to use your name and verbally cancel this, then follow up with a fax. Some banks will do this for you and then cancel the standing order.

Consumo gas. (Obvious). Wow the KWH of gas is far cheaper than electricity.
Then
1. Termino fijo
2. Alquiler de contador. This is the monthly rental. I pay for 2 months and its 2.44 Euro approx. Half that (approx) for a month. 1.22
This is low enough for me NOT to use bottled gas for the cost of changeover and the hassle of finding space for the bottles.
The Termino fijo is 4.35 Euro/month. What is that please? I suspect its some sort of standing charge/rental.
If it is some sort of rental then I am paying less than 6 euros +/- 5.50 a month regardless of gas usage....in total standing charges.
Still debatable as to whether we change.... but would make financial sense over a few years - with our usage. Just the hassle factor has to be counted in.
The big savings would be from installing gas central heating (I think) as the cost is so much cheaper than electricity. Heating in winter.
Or one of those movable gas bottle heater - but I think they increase humidity in the rooms, and we are very humid here normally. I hesitate to do that for the humidity.
Gas is just under 6 cents and electricity just under 15 c / KWH. Also the rental of the electricity is much higher... but you cant stop those monthly charges, like you can with using bottle gas.
to be expected when they have you by the short and curlies!!

a little word of warning....... Having now done this we found that a gas bottle only lasted 2 weeks! The engineer came around and explained that we need to switch the pilot light off every night and relight in the morning - this seems a bit of a phaff and had i realised this, I probably would not have changed as re-lighting the pilot light is not always easy for visitors etc.

However if you are concerned get a boiler with electronic ignition.

By chance we were chatting with a friend and he told us that there is a plumber that will fit a new boiler - with a higher spec for around 300 Euros. Apparently the current boilers wont drive 2 showers simultaneously with a good presssure etc. Seems an amazing price to me.
We will do this when we have problems with the boiler......

After the burglary of friends' house, we had to call a locksmith. He was extremely helpful, and speaks good English.
His name is Ahmed and his phone: 651.561.376.
According his business card, he also does painting, assembling furniture, pergolas, lamps, mosquito nets, awnings, repairs and renovations of masonry, plaster, drywall, plumbing, electrical, etc ...
Highly recommended!
Hiya
The above was a very helpful post by the Lord Mayor; maybe Ahmed could give you the contact details of a registered gas boiler fitter ?

Hi Jan
By coincidence was chatting to a friend who had exactly the same problem, cold water, luckily we had a local expert at the table and he suggested that he try a simple thing.....
Turn the water temp knob to cold!!
Apparently Fadesa sometimes reversed the connections!!
Result... IT WORKED he has hot water....
Can you believe it..... !! I hope its a simple as this for you!

Having read the comments about how long the gas bottles last, I was shocked to hear that they only last a couple of weeks. If this is the case then I can't see how it would be cheaper to run than the mains gas. Also there is the hassle of constantly changing the bottles, especially for guests. I am not sure that the pilot light would make any real difference to the consumption, but a friend of ours said a bottle only lasts a week for her and 3 teenagers
Does anyone else have some estimates of how long a bottle would last?

Unbelievable, I wish I was there now to give it a try. We've had hot water in the past, but never hot enough for a decent bath. Emailed ADA this weekend but now want to give this a go first.
If it works will let you know, we can't be the only ones with this problem and the drinks will be on us.

Ohmigosh! My friend is having a small period 'off the wagon' but when he gets back on it, there's a load of 'temptation' for him. We had lunch with the friends who turned the knob to cold yesterday and they still joke about the knob position!
