Because someone walks across a busy main road without getting hit doesn't mean you can do it and get away with it.

Many people here are citing instances where they have put their "best friend" in the hold. Their decision, but always thinking of themselves first.

I noted you have a pit bull, a potentially unstable dog, hence the reason why some carriers balk at taking them. So what is the long term effect on such a dog.?

If your decision is based on using a car/van service from Spain to UK and you are saying it is a long time in a vehicle, it will be the same on the way back with you and your car.

caveat emptor
Okey dokey. I joined this forum for info on Las Palmas, Gran Canaria as we are considering relocating there as an option to going back to the UK in 2013.Let me clarify, we are British Citizens, who have lived in South Korea for 13 years due to the shipbuilding industry here. Oldest child will need to do A levels next year so hence the move etc etc! The title of this post caught my eye. I rescued a 'street dog' here. Yeah they do eat dog & will take strays off the streets or unwanted pets. Horrific, horrific 'trade'. I won't go into details. & I am not talking big dogs here. The average Korean pet dog weighs around 5kg. Our gorgeous little Maltese is 3kg (although before her matted hair was shaved and over grown nails cut - she weighed an additional 2.5 kg). They will breed dogs specifically for eating but not all dogs eaten are from that source. So Domino my dear what would you have me do?? Put Snowy back on the streets of Korea or pay a couple of thousand UK pounds to a pet transport company with an excellent reputation who will send pets only via approved airlines?? Its a rhetorical question of course as Snowy, or child no.3, as she is often known is most certainly going where we go!

Our spaniel flew into Malaga accompanied by friends who were minding her while we got settled in Spain. My OH was allowed to go into the baggage hall (having removed all items from his body except his clothing) and was astonished to see our dog and cage coming thru´the rubber flaps on the luggage belt accompanied by an airport employee on his knees holding her cage and comforting her!!

She was a bit out of it for a few hours but otherwise fine. Having said that I would only do it again if absolutely necessary. Instead I´ve had a friend come and stay when we´re absent.

For the original poster - have you considered a housesitter? There are lots of sites out there offering this service.

Obviously driving will hardly be a practical option in this case, so as it's a straight choice between having Snowy on menu del dia or flying in an aircraft, I expect it's a no brainer.

Angil
my original posting was made with the view the dog and humans were travelling within Europe, please re-read carefully.
for longer distances across the world then other considerations have to come into play.
(having flown from UK to Singapore in the 60's in a propeller driven Douglas DC6 and home again in another prop driven Britannia I know how far it is to travel)

when we had 3 dogs they were called "the kids", so please don't think I am making comments without having had dogs, felt the heartache of their loss to illness and old age.
why else do you think I believe everyone should think carefully before putting them through what will be a traumatic experience.

so, having considered all options very very carefully, driving totally out of the question and made a decision then I trust it all goes well and you and Snowy enjoy a full and active life in your new home
but would suggest you are carefull for several months in noting the reactions to certain sounds that may cause a slight change in temprement or fear.

Two days ago I was looking for a price to fly my med size dog from Manchester to Gibralter and the price was £520 one way with Monach...............that's just for the dog...!!! probably £30 for me.
If you travel by ferry from Santander to Portsmouth it is only £30 for a pet but with a car and dog the price is £445 one way. That takes 35 or so hours.
You loose both ways with a pet. Hope that info helps
