And it's too far away to send out the Dunkirk rowboats...
It's odd though, how much we expats - living by the Grace of God in Spain - knock those pesky furriners. French, Spaniards, argies (poor things)... We knew how to fit right in by Jiminy '...the British assimilated themselves into Colonies pretty quick, look at the amount of "native" wives they "took" in numerous colonies or the customs they adopted and that have now become so part of British life...'.
Yer whah?

We had no choice over HK, we only had the lease, India, much to the protestations of my best friends Indian wife, had to be handed back as it was costing an absolute fortunes, which we didn't have at the end of the war... Gib will never be relinquished and quite frankly it never should, the Spanish are complete hypocrites, its out of their control, screw them!
We are hanging on to the Falklands for two reasons, as well you know, firstly the people there are British, its their sovereign right to decide who they are part of and to almost a man they want to be part of Britain, Argentina has already made it quite clear that if they ever got it back they will throw the inhabitants out, they want revenge.... secondly is the most important, if the oil that sits off shore in the Falklands proves to be worth while it will make the UK more capable to stand on its own two feet with its energy needs... why do you think Argentina want it back? To free the Islands? To liberate the penguins? No, they want it back to own the oil reserves... fuck them, if they want another war, good... Most untrustworthy bunch of malingerers I have ever met, I've yet to meet an honest one and I have met literally thousands over the years....

Las time around we had no AD radar, therefore we had no real warning of their arrival. We had no aircraft in the area, no naval presence and about 80 marines plus the FIDF.
This time we have excellent AD radar, anti-aircraft missiles, 1,200 battle hardened troops and enough aircraft to destroy their entire air force in very short order.
We would also have warning that they were on their way and could re-inforce in a very short time. Added to that: their navy's flagship is a type 42 destroyer so our lack of a carrier is nothing to worry about.
If they did learn anything last time, it should be: don't **** with us, which I think they have.

Oh and if you think that Argentina will be able to fight back a well equipped British Force, think again...

There's been a couple of threads on e-goat as well over the last couple of years with some guys who are fairly knowledgeable about each side's capabilities. The conclusion is we would give them a bigger slap than last time.
It's a while since I took a close interest in such matters but I think they sum it up fairly well, along with the arrsers

Yeah well what do I know you're probably right.
I was sure I heard it was some general on TV that said we are ill equipped nowadays, but the government have their blinkers on, and skint as we are, we can always afford a good war.

Britain will be left without a fully-functional aircraft carrier until 2030, a hard-hitting report by MPs has found. But that said I'd still fancy our chances with what we've got, the Argies haven't the stomach for it.

Not to be picky, but the Ocean and Illustrious don't have aircraft, one is Commando Carrier and Assault Ship and the other a helicopter carrier. (used to carry Harriers). As for the "couple of years", that's wishful thinking, we're going to have a big gap for many years to come.

(Sorry, I am never normally like this about any nation but I have seen so much bad from the Argies in the UK... )

The only way we could win a war against Argentina would be with nuclear weapons, and the world would never agree to that. We can't even use them unless we get permission from the US.
Are we going to nuke Buenos Aires because of some daft Islands in the South Atlantic?
On top of that, we're skint. Period. We can't afford another war. There's no money left in the kitty. We're bringing our soldiers home to join the dole queue.

Funnily enough, I mentioned this today to my wife after hearing about Phil having a stent fitted, this lady's father was ill and needed a stent fitted, so she bought it in UK and took it to Argentina, as she said if she posted it he would never get it, it would be stolen at customs!
Sounds weird, but that how desperate she was to help her father, but it's a true story, I couldn't make that up!

Like you, I couldn't see us having to resort to nuclear weapons simply to deter some argies, conventional weapons would do fine. As I say, they have no stomach for it! The argies were OK sending some jets and fighting from a distance, as soon as it got down to the serious hand to hand stuff , untried, young argies conscripts against battle hardened British troops, they threw their hands in the air. Against better prepared troops, we'd have struggled, so unless they have improved, I'd fancy us to have the upper hand. They reckon there's always been a conflict with which British troops have been involved somewhere in the world, if there wasn't, we would have started one.
