I might be wrong, but I am sure people moved to and lived in Europe before the EU was formed.

I tried to send them a 'broadside' but don't think they liked it. What an idiotic piece of 'news'!!!

If the article coming from the Daily Mail is criticised because of its source, here's another one:
Sorry, it got swallowed up in cyberspace, but it's a similar one from the Telegraph, also quoting Foreign Office sources which say such 'evacuation' plans are in place.
It makes sense, I suppose, the UK can hardly turn its back on a million Brits in Spain. If you can't access your money in Spain, you would have to leave, it's as simple as that.

The Times have run it as a front page headline and to compound the idiocy they have included the old saw about those with frozen pensions as being a special category for help! Except they are all in Aus, Canada, NZ and South Africa. All Europeans SPs are index linked.

True but it actually was first reported in the Sunday Times which now seems to have taken over from the NOTW.! The rest of the papers have now picked up on it as it was also mentioned on the Andrew Marr show this morning.
Of course the FCO have contingency plans for most unlikely things - the media just blow it up as total scaremongering.
The public hate expats as they are all living in the sun, not paying UK taxes, getting their WFA, sailing around in big yachts and smoking cheap fags! Just read a few of the comments on the article on the DM online!

Well they always say they are living in the sun. Have seen "in me shorts" stuff on comments. No-one in the UK knows that winter heat is a myth
I think the contingency plans are credible, they have to do that, but probably they are thinking in terms of civil unrest. Just get your euro out and there shouldn't be money problems.

It's not just the DM commentators who don't like us expats living it up in the sun, a lot of family and friends often make somewhat catty remarks too, unless they're after a free holiday.
We've started to tell them that it's cold and miserable in Spain, and at this moment in time, it is - not just cold, freezing.

I've read some other daft articles and even seen clips of people preparing for some sort of financial Armageddon by stock piling basic food items and even buying guns.
What a way to live. Of course the worst could happen, in many more ways than the silly Euro collapsing; I live in an earthquake zone, should I prepare for the next one?
I have taken some sensible steps, just in case. I have two cases of wine in the cold garage, one red and one rose, and a few bottles of a 12-year old malt. Oh, and some cans of baked beans as well.
And if they're going to evacuate me, I would like to go back on the Arc Royal, I've got Rod Stewart on my little music machine.

And quite lonely with that diet, you holed up in an underbuild after eating and drinking your hoarded supplies

Cheers.

You'd be left in Alicante sticking your cash card into the CAM bank and hearing laughter. I was going to call you a Spanish git, but I don't know how to use smilies and could get into trouble.
