The funny trees.. are SO BEAUTIFUL aren't they. :)
They're actually called a "canape" of trees :)
They have them on Holland Park Avenue and in many other little roads in London.

We live in France and visit Spain in Winter for a Sun top-up and bit of English and decent Chinese/Indian food, This is of course as well as enjoying Spanish cuisine along with top quality Argentinian steaks.

I have been assured there is one bus daily, not weekends, that leaves Malaga airport at 3pm, and returns from Martos at 10 am. I wonder if anyone has travelled this way, and how reliable the service is. Any information would be very much appreciated. I am new to this forum, but have found some of the answers/questions very helpful.

Hi Nicola, I only recently moved to Martos and, as I don't drive, I am dependent on public transport. I arrived in Malaga and took the bus to Granada. And from there to Martos. It was very easy. Although there is a direct bus from Malaga to Martos, this only goes once a day as you mentioned. Stopping over in Granada gives you more choice. I can't remember how much I spent, but it can't have been more than 20 euros

Hi Timmy
Nicola here, hope all good with you. Are you actually in Martos? haven't been on the forum for some time now, too much going on!!! Last went to Martos in March and hoping to get back again soon. I remember you saying I should go onto Facebook as it would be a good way of getting in touch with a few more people (British/spanish) who reside or visit Martos. Any chance you could request me as a friend, or vise versa. It would be great to get to know a few more people. Cheers Nicola Brown

Hi everyone, I wonder if any of you guys have any knowledge on repairing cracks in plunge pools. I have one in the garden of my Martos home and would like to have it repaired, as a swimming pool is years away, unfortunately!!!! I have researched the Internet and Torque-lock system is advised, but pretty expensive!!! I wonder if Mohammad may be the guy to ask. He made a great job of my terrace, but a little different from plunge pools !!! Cheers Nicola

Hello!
We are looking to buy a townhouse in Martos to relocate and live in a year.Looking to travel down this November/December if work commitments permit.
Would love to make contact with others who have bought there to find out more about the town.

Hi
We have never thought of Martos or the area nor have we been there. A lot of people seem to live there. Can someone please tell me what the attraction is of living there the pros and the cons as it may well be worth a visit.
Thanks in advance

Re: Does anyone live in the Jaen / Martos area?

It looks attractive to us because it is a city with a lot going on.You are able to live on the edge of it and feel like you are in the countryside but have all the amenities to modern living on the doorstep.
At the moment we own a house in a village in spain in a lovely area and it has shops and restaurants but it is small and very quiet and in quiet seasons feels a little dead.
We are originally from London so whilst where we currently own is fantastic for holidays away from stress and a great retreat, for full time living it is not practical for us.We wish to stroll as opposed to always drive to nightlife and my husband really needs an active gym!lol!
We do not wish to leave Andalucia and spent time researching somewhere else with lots of life near to other notable places and Martos fits the bill.
You can still get to Jaén, Granada,Malaga,Cordoba etc quite easily from there too.
Cost of living in Andalucia is cheaper still than a lot of parts of spain so that is all our boxes ticked.
So these are our reasons.

Greetings, folks. We are Americans who have owned a vacation bolt for several years in Olvera (Cadiz), which we continue to visit each year because so many expat British, Australian, and even other Americans have second homes or principal residences there. We sold our little property at a considerable loss three years ago, during *la crisis* ... but now are looking to invest, again, in a second home. The more we read about Martos, the more attractive it appears! A couple of questions, please, if I may: (1) To get to Olvera, we typically fly into Malaga ... then hire a car ... and drive about an hour and a half. Which airport is most convenient to Martos for those traveling there from other countries? (2) I am a retired university professor and (progressive, inter-denominational) church pastor in a same-sex marriage to a wonderful person for 23 years now. I realize that this is a sensitive topic for some folks ... but in Olvera, for instance, neither the Brits nor the Spaniards gave any thought to one's sexual orientation. We were just part of the "gang" there. Could we expect the same type of reception and treatment in Martos?

to be honest, or from my thinking once you have spent your 20k to whatever buying a house then what is left? Food and entertainment ....how much can u eat or drink? I cant see more than a hundred or two Euros a week, for a single person ....reevaluate for 2 people or more ...House wise its 15,000 Euros and up ....how far you want to g
o is your decision ..

Hi there Diesel
I've only had my house a year, and only visit at the moment, but it's much cheaper than Britain. I've been told electricity costs the same as here, but to be honest you use a lot less anyway! I use gas bottle for heating water and cooking, again very cheap! Most people I gave spoken too install a wood burner eventually to heat the house in the colder months, again very low cost......nothing if FREEwood!!! Water and council tax costs less per year, than I pay a month in this Country!!!! Hope this helps. Lucky you retiring at 53, I wish!

Re: Does anyone live in the Jaen / Martos area?

Browsed through online pictures of Martos.

It appears to be an unspectacular town, very typical in fact, located in the middle of nowhere offering little more than cheap property and a growing expat community.

No offence, but apart from the good value property, which can be found widely inland, what is the appeal of Martos ?

diesel dek Sep 11th 2015 4:02 pm

Re: Does anyone live in the Jaen / Martos area?

Many thanks for the replies guys, found this site by off chance but have heard of the areas above & estate agents mentioned (& have had email contact), ideally id like to be closer to the coast with good travel links but where else fits the bill ?? at low prices, i agree on the log burner idea its ideal & had an idea its lower costs for most things than the uk, my main aim is to relocate to get out of the work syndrome 'early', & of coarse better weather, i have a 3 bed semi with no mortgage at the mo so the idea is to sell up cash a small pension that will buy the new house & then live of the small weekly pension topped up by the capital from the house until we both have our state pension.

Mark604 Sep 11th 2015 8:53 pm

Re: Does anyone live in the Jaen / Martos area?

I live ten minutes or a bit more south of Martos but in reply to the question, "What is the appeal of Martos?" there are a couple of things to me.
Firstly is its location in that it may appear to be "in the middle of nowhere" but to me it is 'in the middle of visits to Granada, Cordoba, Jaen, tons of other places like Priego de Cordoba, Antequera, Zuheros, Montefrio, Iznajar, Espejo, Guadix, Baza, Ubeda, Cazorla and more.' I can also be down on the coast or up in the mountains without much trouble. I can walk along the Via Verdes, hang glide in Alcaudete, taste (arguably) the best olive oil in Spain in Baena, be down in the Alpujarras eating serrano ham or up in the Sierra Nevadas skiing.
The list goes on.

Yes, the town itself can be one of many that may look similar. But, it is a no-nonsense working town with a sense of community, no real set up for tourists apart from the odd sign here and there and is as Spanish as they come. There are enough expats there for anyone not to feel left out but also they are in the vast, vast minority compared to locals. It isn't a Marbella/Benalmadena/Benidorm town with expats tripping over themselves and all the signs in English. The expats mix with the locals and want to be part of the community, they are in Spain because it is Spain, not because it is a little England but with better weather.

Possibly there are many other towns that have all the advantages I see in Martos, but I'd wish anyone good luck in finding them.

A photo doesn't always provide the full 'picture', so a useful insight. Certainly an area worth exploring, thanks.
