Ayamonte is the Ayuntamiento and has a municipal population of 22,000 in a fairly compact area with all the year round Spanish activities that go on in a small Spanish town. It has been said that it is not too sophisticated and for culture you have to visit Huelva or Sevilla.
Either side of the centre about 5 km due north and south are two urbanisations to the North is a golf resort Costa Esuri which will have a potential population in peak season of 18000 and to the south is the beach and marina resort with a furhter golf course of Isla Canela again a peak population of 18000. That said, as a province Huelva has a lot of attractions, especially its proximity to Seville and the Algarve. The Sierra around Aracena is delightful - towns like Galaroza, Fuenteheridos, Cortegana etc are picture-postcard like and are a lot truer to the mythical "real Spain" people claim they strive for. The coastal area, whilst very pleasant indeed, fulfils foreigners' Romantic concept of what 'real Spain' is - stoned walkways and old looking buidings (despite being made to look that way only a few years ago!!), tapas bar after tapas bar, laberinthine alleyways full of tiny shops etc.... Ayamonte does this very well. It is in many ways a theme-park Spanish town - and I don't mean that as a put down. However, it begs the question, if one were to take out all the tourism, both national and international, would Ayamonte (or other coastal towns anywhere is Spain to be fair) look like this 'real Spanish town' that has been constructed?? El Rompido seems to be going that way too, however due to lack of space near the sea there is little they can really do and what they have done so far is really quite nice indeed. That would be somewhere I would recommend to a newcomer, especially as property values there are weathering the misleadingly termed "property crisis" extremely well with average house prices per square metre at approx €2500 this last quarter, a rise on the previous quarter, compared to Ayamonte's €1900, a 3% drop - although to be fair this could have a lot to do with more houses being available in Ayamonte due to the massive construction projects of CE and Canela.

So..............without any more of the nasty comments, whats the night life like in the area?
I like a drink, well actually I like a lot of drink, and I like my rugby and sports in general, so where do you recommend? Apart from the height of summer, Matt, Ayamonte centre tends to be quite quiet in the evenings, but then picks up again around the early hours when the youngsters head out to the discos. This, though, actually appeals to most (me included!!) as it means drinking in relative peace without it being a morgue either In terms of going out and and seeing a lots of people on the streets, for a bit of atmosphere, the more populated towns of Lepe or Isla Cristina are great fun for evening drinking, and when summer comes, likewise La Antilla/Islantilla and Rompido. A lot of people, especially the Huelva city dwellers, like Punta Umbria but it has never been my cup of tea (always too many people) |

Has anyone got any personal experience of how the spanish mortgage market has been affected by the recent market conditions? Is it much the same as the UK? And does anyone know if the road to the new developement below the Parador has opened yet? It was looking almost ready when we were over last. |

Where do, or did you play - club not position? Your not in London 1 by any chance are you? Perhaps the Proposed Hotel could put in a pitch. I also understand the Puma's might be looking for a base somewhere in spain to join in the Six Nations - CE would be good. |

If Argentina is accepted - and that is a massive 'if' - Valencia has already been chosen as their base. The choice came down in the end to Seville, Madrid and Valencia. Esuri would never have got a look in, frankly, no matter how good it would be. I'm dead against Argentina basing themselves in Spain as I see this as detrimental to Spanish rugby. They are progressing quite nicely and we should be focussing our efforts on supporting home based clubs and international selections before getting in these outsiders. Nice for the visiting fan, good for the Argnetinians and Brits who live here, but it would never inspire the Spanish to go out and support it. Spain are playing Georgia today in the 6 Nations B tournament. Why not talk about that??? |

No the new road hasn't opened yet and chances are it will be a long time yet!! we live nearby and this road would be ideal for us to use but, we have been told that until all the building work is completed the road will remain closed. Re: COSTA ESURI - AYAMONTE
Having just read something about night life in Ayamonte, and discos, and late night (early morning) socializing, is there anybody out there who can give me some info. We are taking our two teenagers & their friends over in July & need some advise. Whats good in the way of teenage night life and what are the drinking laws? Also, is there anything we should be worried about or places that should be avoided?
Any snippets would be welcomed. Kim |
