I am thinking about getting a kindle but with a speed of 40kbps how long would an average sized book take to download?

It is very quick. I have never timed it but I would say 1-2 minutes max.

I buy all my books from the UK website using a 1-Click account which you set up when you first register.

You can also buy direct from your Kindle wherever you are (assuming you have the 3G version).

If I lived in UK with access to a good library I would probably not bother with a Kindle but living in Spain it is wonderful. Instead of being limited to reading English books found in charity shops etc I now have access to almost anything I want to read.
I live in the UK, but still have a kindle as I can get any book I want on line, and for free, we do have a library here, but they often don't have the book you want, and I'm not prepared to pay to reserve. It's the new books taht I want, but they are in demand at the library, so I get them for my kindle for free..

You have probably been lucky.

They have a terrible reputation for after sales service and have had for a long time. The fact that they are owned by Dixons doesn't help.

How can you get them for free if they are new releases that are in demand?

That's reason enough to avoid them!

Wow you have surprised me, I must admit though, I do get some conflicting emails when I order, even in Hungarian since I have purchased from there before too. I´m not quite sure why this happens and have asked them to no avail, but I have always had my goods and I have had three lots now, they are not bad on price.

Yes their prices are good and if it arrives in one piece and works you will be happy.

On the other hand, if they lose it on the way or it doesn't work when it arrives they are totally useless and expect you to sort it out at your expense.

There is very little that you can't get at a similar or better price from Amazon and they are brilliant for after sales service.

Books are usually less than 1 mb, often only about 200kb, unless you want those with illustrations.

Well I've now ordered the 3G Kindle to be delivered to son in UK.
I've also put the "Kindle reader for PC" from Amazon onto my computer and I have downloaded my very first e-book to it.

I must say that I was very impressed by the speed of the download, even on my rural connection of 1mb it only took one minute, and at a cost of £2.77 it's quite a saving on the price of the paperbacked version.

Happy, happy, happy!
