I did think of that as in devilled whitebait and but couldn't find the connection to the clue apart from 'went first' could be 'led'

It is that but I only know because I cheated.:o

Spoiler:
fellow = devil (presumably but a bit obscure) and led = went first.

It is part of a crossword which contains the names of 8 French towns - therefore if you cross them off you have de-villed it.:frown:

Re: Any cryptic minds out there

Thanks big wheels.

Jim, I can live with Devil &led but the crossword in front of me doesn't appear to have the names of 8 French Towns. If it does then I must have driven through France with my eyes closed.

I'll have a google around and try and find them.

Any ideas as to the now remaining clue?

Incredible I've found seven, Condom, Nancy, Ales, Dole, Tours, Orange and Nice

What's the eighth?

What was the clue in the crossword? Off hand, I can't think of another French town reading like an English word, except possibly Die?

You would have thought there might be lots but the only other one I can think of is Angers.

Don't know how I missed that one. Still one driving me mad. I think I'll cut it out and stick it in a cupboard for week.
