I thought of fell (in battle) but it doesn't relate to cruel. Then I though of 'evil' but that doesn't make sense.

I thought also it was something to 1066, but no.

My only other thought was a three letter battle ending in L with a D in the middle that means cruel.

We need more help methinks

Bit obscure, but might help.

Twelfth Night Scene 1 Act 1.

That instant was I turn'd into a hart;
And my desires, like fell and cruel hounds,
E'er since pursue me.

I'm sure fell is right...

What does fell mean?

fellfɛl(adj.)
fierce; cruel; dreadful; savage:
a fell beast.
destructive; deadly:
a fell blow; a fell disease.
... bit obscure maybe.

OK 7. I was foxed on this one so I cheated and I have an answer but it's so bad I'm refusing to believe it's correct. So I'm not saying what it is.:p

Apparently Rab C Nesbitt is also known as the Govan Philosopher.

He certainly fits the bill of 'armchair philosopher'

It's good enough for me and full credit to you for that one.
