I'm just being honest here, not at all arrogant. Curious to know more about the Oz way of life in view of our future move, I have attempted to watch the movies belew. So crappy..... may be its just me, or my selection of movies or perhaps thats how Aussies make movies?
Holy Smoke - what's the story?
Strange Bedfellows - has anyone managed to get a laugh out of this?
Mad Max series - I could not even stand the first 10 minutes
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - so shallow
December Boys - whats so special?
Lantana - simply crap
Ned Kelly - Australian bravery in Vietnam? Whats the point?
The Castle - hardly passable as a comedy, very mediocre
Rabbit Proof Fence - typical aborigine bashing movie, lacks depth
Australia - seems so artificial even with Nicole Kidman in it, weak
Rogue - is that what you call acting prowess?
Wolf Creek - is there a difference between pure brutality and horror film?
I'm usually comparing the above with good movies that come out of the US and the UK.

That said, I'd not put Mad Max in there - legendary movies and the first was excellent. Rabbit proof fence was well made as well...

Some of my fave films of all time are Australian (Strictly Ballroom, Murial's wedding, Moulin Rouge). Although I agree many more are crap (Chopper you mist off your list
)
You could make a list of UK films and come up with some seriously crap ones too. The problem is that when you make a film outside of hollywood, and therefore smaller budget, you have to rely on mainly storytelling. Oz humour is different to UK humour so a small budget Oz comedy will never appeal as much to me as a UK one.

I find the agro of having to turn the telly upside down puts me off watching Aussie films

A while back people were questioning if Aussie movies are 'too dark' and that might be possible.
The thing I dont like about Aussie movies are the characters never seem to be believable apart from Chopper and Priscilla. I just dont buy that anything worth making a movie about, ever happens here (except murders).

Stop me if I'm wrong here, but what did Ned Kelly have to do with Vietnam? I can't see the relevance.
"Aborigine bashing"? A story which champions Aboriginal rights and details the abuses committed against them is "Aborigine bashing"?
Ask the makers of Saw, Hostel, etc...

Moulin Rouge? Aussie Film? Why because it was an Aussie director? As far as I am aware that does not make it an Aussie film

Yep, and the Saw sequels. And the writers/directors of all the other torture porn flicks, like House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects.
Which begs the question: what makes an Aussie film an Aussie film?

l agree alot are crap but theres also lots of good ones considering most are made on shoe string budgets , What about Gallipoli probably the best WW1 film ever made and breaker Morant was a brilliant film, the first croc dundee film, Picnic at Hanging rock there are alot of other good ones.
Chopper and romper stomper good but very violent, two really good ones l've seen " the interview" starring hugo weaving and " traveling north" staring Leo Mckern from rumpole of thre bailey
