Maybe if you had put it like this in the first place I would not have been so quick to be on the defensive.
"for Christ sake don't buy a book" is pretty much saying my advice was crap.
Have you ever read this book? well I have and it worked and I know alot of people that have read this and also read the independat testimonials of others that have read it too.
Alan Carr has clinics all over the world and has over a 90% success rate and offers a money back guarantee.
I totally disagree that giving a friend a book to read would make the situation worse, and as long as this person wasn't nagged at to read it straight away but just put it in a drawer until she is ready to think about stopping where is the harm in that.
If you don't want to provoke a reaction from someone don't answer in a way that will cause offence then.

No the book does not advocate patches at all or any nicotine replacement.
You still smoke while you read the book.
I hope you find it as helpful as I did and will do again shortly.
Unfortunately I have become a nicotine addict again in the last 4 months after stopping over 3 years ago. I had never even been tempted to have one since I stopped with the book, it was down to one fateful night when I had some really devastating news and I was with a friend who was smoking. I just said "give me one of them i think I need one" now if I could turn back to that night I never would have done that as its unbelievable how it hooks you again and I had been a very happy non-smoker.
Anyway I will stop waffling now.
If you are ready to stop then what this book will do is cement everything you know about smoking and open your eyes to things you didn't.
Good luck with it and I would be interested to know what you think to the book.
I'm just waiting for hubby to read it and i'm next
Oh BTW we are off camping easter wkend with some friends for the first time since we arrived and I was hoping to have stopped by then too.

This isn't a personal thing, it's just that I disagree with your way of helping the situation. I maintain that giving someone the book COULD make the situation worse.

Thanks for that

The book should be here by the end of the week, plenty of time to read it before Easter.
Good luck to you too, I'll let you know what I think and whether I manage to give up

You won't need luck - just read it properly from cover to cover. More people have given up for good reading that book that I know personally than any other sort of method for a reason.

Surely those horrible images that are shown across the fag boxes over here should have an impact on people !!!!!!
Doubt if they would ever pass some form of censorship in the UK.
I was fortunate to give up 11 years ago now, but that was only after surgery to remove a 90% blockage in one of my arteries.
I really wish those that want to give up all the very best, its hard but if you got support from family or friends you can do it..........."I CAN AND I WILL"

I gave up after reading it and tried all sorts of crap before that, patches, hypotherapy, accupunture, willpower etc etc.

I read the book a few years back, well when i said read it i got about half way through it and was to scared to finish it.
Dont think i was in the right frame of mind to give up then. I really want to do it soon though
But i have no will power at all when it comes to smoking.
Good luck Nightnurse, let us know how you get on it might inspire me !!

Yes and thats why you got some verbal from me, its not your place to judge my advice in that way but to just offer your own lame advice "don't nag them", if you have not read the book then you have no valid reason to comment on it, you should have just left your comment about not nagging them and that was that.

"Don't nag them" isn't 'lame advice', you try to force someone to give up something before they are ready by constantly repeating the same things and see how far you get ... or they get away from you.
You can 'nah nah' childishly all you like but that is what I believe.

Doesn't matter what's in the book, it's the act of giving it that will annoy some.

It is still madness to use bowel disease as an excuse to continue smoking.

There is some evidence to suggest that nicotine can reduce the inflammation from certain bowel diseases (see the article here). I was once offered nicotine patches to help with my ulcerative colitis, but refused them (I don't want that stuff anywhere near my body, let alone in my bloodstream).
It is still madness to use bowel disease as an excuse to continue smoking.

She more or less pointed the same way as you Vash - but want I want to know is 'had she been a non smoker to begin with, then the withdrawal from nicotine wouldn't cause stress for her'
She also tried to convince me that their is no 'proven research' that shows clear links between passive smoking related illness. Now i thought there was.
