Re: Potential Move to North NJ from UK…lots to consider

$4,000/month for rent seems doable to me for a 3 bed in Montclaiir, which along with Maplewood/South Orange is one of the towns Brooklynites flock to. An example of a home would be...

Re: Moving to West LA - best Private elementary schools?

While it's true that school generally starts at 5 in the US, most? (many) families have their kids start what is called pre-k at 3 or 4. Some public (government funded schools, notably NYC now have...

Re: Family moving to New York

I live in Essex county and do like it. Montclair is on the Montclair-Boonton line and has a few train stations with direct access to Penn station. It just depends where the OP's husband's office will...

Re: Family moving to New York

You can get similar schools on Long Island and in Westchester County, especially for that budget. Personally I'd choose Westchester County (Rete's suggested towns), especially if his office is closer...

Re: Family moving to New York

Where in Manhattan is his office? LIRR and NJ Transit go to Penn and Metro North goes to Grand Central. So depending on how close he is to these train stations, you might need to add additional...

Re: US post interview etiquette

I just mean that since we're in the US, most of the interviewers are from the US and might thus expect thank you emails. It might be industry based, location based, who knows. Your hiring decision...

Re: US post interview etiquette

You're not hired based on the email. it is what it is. That's the professional advice I've mostly been given. I had an interview a couple of months ago and the recruiter (an external one) reminded me...

Re: US post interview etiquette

I guess it is not as common as I thought it was. Going to college and grad school here and from reading professional advice, it is usually suggested. Just a simple thank you for taking out the time...

Re: Moving to West LA - best Private elementary schools?

it's probably best to go to the LA section of the 'city data' US forums to get this information.

Re: What did you sacrifice in your endeavor to obtain a green card?

Mine is not really a sacrifice per se as I moved here for college. I would have longed moved to the South for the weather and lower cost of living if my husband and I were not on work visas. Since...

Re: Changing status from B2 to L2 - In or out of US??

The change of status is not really for the current stay. It most likely would be dated for however long your L1 status is. it's just that you need a valid visa to enter the country and she would not...

Re: Changing status from B2 to L2 - In or out of US??

Do it in the UK since you'll both be there. It's not really a B2 - L2 change when outside the US as you can't change status out of the country. She'll simply be applying for an L2 visa based on your...

Re: Would i face difficulties renewing my US B1/B2 visa ?

Chichi, make sure to include proof that your medical bills were fully paid when you apply for your next B1/2.

I had been living in the US for 15 years when my son was born and moved to the UK...

I watched that episode last night and just rolled my eyes. So many things that won't happen. Being able to schedule an interview with an immigration officer at all, but they were able to do it in a...

Re: Manhattan advice

OP, it mostly depends on your budget.

I do want to say that there are many good private preschools/kindergartens in NJ that are definitely not $30K a year, my goodness.

Re: Total newbie

The World Bank and its various organizations like the IFC, actually do hire 'regular' professionals on G visas, who are not necessarily politically connected. The UN might too, but I don't know much...

Re: Total newbie

Yes it is hard to get an employer to sponsor you, that's a fact. I just want to add that having an accounting degree/experience is actually one of the easier employment categories to get a company to...

Re: When and how to look for a house rental

You don't always have to pay a commission. if for example, you find a rental you like in an apartment building that does its own marketing, there'll be no fee. If you rent an apartment/house directly...

Re: Working Part-time in the UK and USA

The university should be able to apply for an uncapped H-1B petition based on part time work. You would probably need a tax accountant/lawyer to advise on the tax question.

Re: L1b to H1b to GC my journey

As Ian said, the SSA is the main one. It's not mandatory as it's the same number but I preferred to have a new social security card with no restriction noted on it.

Personally, I felt different...

Re: L1b to H1b to GC my journey

Congratulations!! Our EB2 took 6 months (I-485 applied mid Jan 2017, approved June 2017). Like Orangepants though, that was after many years of other visas plus a stint in Canada and the UK. The perm...

Re: Logistics of moving from the UK to the USA

Started at 48K in what field though? I mean I started at 48K at a Big 4 accounting firm in 2004 in Boston. It means nothing. The current starting salaries are somewhere around 45K - 60K depending on...
