Not aware of anything that lets you go down to ground level at the footpaths, if memory serves me you can get right through from the tower houses all the way to Cleadon Village on street level but...

South Shields is Geordie, Roker I believe is Mackem and since its barely a 10 min bus ride between the two I guess you'd be in "border territory" there
