20% of people in Canada born overseas as of 2006:

http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/as-sa/97-557/p2-eng.cfm

A massively higher proportion in the cities of course.

There's a...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

It seems a bit parochial to me, to assume that English will always do for labels.

I'm looking at a calendar featuring scenes of Northern Ireland, Norn Iron is not known for diversity and there's...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

I think most do but here, for example, there are four school boards;

- French Catholic (everything's in French, all communications with the school)
- French Other
- English Catholic
- English...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

It's an official language and that leads to advantages for the speakers, like being native or, in Ontario, Catholic. Whether or not one wishes to make oneself a candidate for an affirmative action...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Perhaps I wasn't clear. She has a job in Vancouver for the Feds. Because it's for the Feds it sometimes entails trips to Ottawa. I don't think she would have the job, in Vancouver, but for speaking...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Eh? The DTES is in Vancouver. UBC is in Vancouver. She hasn't left Vancouver but succeeded there partly in consequence of speaking French.

Granted the French is mainly of value in dealing with...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

I only know the one francophone in BC. She went to university there and travelled for her school, UBC, mooting in French. It seems to me that being on a university's team for any sort of academic...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

If you can find a cradle here he or she will also rant against francophone Canada.

I think that's largely racism substitution. Modern Canada was invented by Pierre Trudeau. Anglophone cradle...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

I vaguely recall reading the book but I picture life in Mississauga (NotQEW), Plano, Aurora and so on as more closely matching the endless episodes of Desperate Housewives.

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Bill 401 was in 1977, they'll have learned English, or German, by now and their children will count as anglos.

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

The last phrase is the crux of my point. I do think that people in subdivisions in Phoenix, Mississauga and Plano lead the same sad and empty lives. Having worked in a great number of North American...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Actually, I know for a fact that my daughter has her job with the Feds (in BC) in part because she's bilingual; that was something that set her apart at the selection for interview stage of the...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

The Guelph area actually has a fair number of francophones. They arrived at the time of Bill 401, when the insurance companies relocated from Montreal to K-W.

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Then more residents of Toronto should learn the language so as to lessen the us vs. them gap between Toronto and the rest of the province. As immigrants we, of course, have an obligation to try and...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

If it's to be able to converse with the greatest number of people then I'd say one of the Asian languages. I think most people who speak Italian or Polish in Toronto also speak English (and quite...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Not speaking Russian just makes you less well educated than you might be. Since it's not a language of the country where you live there's no particular advantage in knowing it. I hear it often,...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

That's the one. I'd ask it it's any good but that'd be like asking a vegetarian to rate The Keg.

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

No. But I do pass a sushi place advertising "all you can eat" which is in a plaza on the west side, there's some sort of bottle recycling facility in the plaza, is that it?

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

I think you understate the degree to which French is spoken in Toronto but my point is not that everyone in Canada speaks French, just that Canada may be a more sensible destination for a francophone...

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Once upon a time, that would have been huge. Today we stopped at a bar advertising 9' TV's. The screens were, indeed, massive but Adebayor stank on each of them.

Re: People come to Canada for Canada or the U.S

Canada is a bilingual country, English and French. America is not. Thus, someone wwho wishes to live in French would be better off in Canada. Someone wishing to live in Spanish would do better to...
