Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I think his views reflect those of Stephen Harper and, I assume, his constituents. However, some might think it a poor show that the 2/3s rule was...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

That is my preferred form of government. Enacting policies and intorducing new legislation only makes the country worse so whatever results in government inertia is to be applauded.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

The current Conservatives are an alliance of the old western separatists, the Reform party, and the ragtag remains of the Progressive Conservative and Alliance parties with Reform calling the shots....

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

But, they're not likely to vote for an actively anti-Sikh, anti-Hindu or anti-Muslim party either so traditionalist thought among immigrants doesn't necessarilly mean more votes for Harper's...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

If the non-conservative parties were to join forces in the same manner as the conservative ones have then the choice of leaders would be between Harper and Duceppe.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

That's a rubbish sentence to start a rubbish comment, not from the Guardian, of course, but from its edited talkboard.

How is Canada retreating? Canadians still spend the winter in the US, they...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

Ahem, thinking Stephen Harper to be a threat to public liberty doesn't make one of the left. Unless you count land baron David Orchard as being of the left. My fear of Harper is apoliticial, it's...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

I mulled "impute", "infer", "imply" and think that infer may be correct here. I think one might reasonably infer from an immigrant's voting, if not for Harper then certainly for Jason Kenney, that...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

People, I would say especially in North America, routinely vote against their interests, if this were not the case Conservative or Republican parties would not gain office. It's the nature of an...

He's not without weaknesses though is he?

Consider this paragraph:

"They will pay for it by cancelling Canadian participation in the F-35 fighter jet program, which every defence analyst I have...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

Others might say that their problem with the Harperitics has nothing to do with the economy. They might say that the influence on the economy claimed by politicians when things go well is...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

His being gay says nothing about the party's position on gay marriage. And it says little about the acceptance of gay people among conservatives, I expect they've also a black cabinet minister if one...

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

Am I reading this wrongly perhaps. I thought Harper was born in Toronto and Jason Kenney in Oakville. They're ersatz westerners.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

Yes. The Liberals defined modern Canada. A vote for Harper is one against the Canada to which we emigrated. I think it excusable for cradles to support such a party but immigrants should know better.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

It's more than an assumption in Harper's case (yes, citations to follow). My questions though were about you, if those are positions you support then perhaps Harper would seem almost moderate to you.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

The question to you was, "do you support the positions as described" are you, for example, opposed to gay marriage? Not, are the Harperists opposed, we know that.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

I don't say that it is. I think the rise of religious fanaticism in Canada and, to a lesser degree in the US, gives cause for concern but that doesn't mean that all other options are better options.

Re: Does anyone else find it ironic...

Lyndon LaRouche?

I don't think the philosophy of the EDL has any sort of religious undertone. If anything they're anti-religious. I suspect that's also true of the FN but haven't checked recently.
