Well the local association elected a new board a year or two ago (can't remember exactly when) and they went about having nominations for candidates.

Guess what. Stephen Harper quashed it and told them that Anders was their man like it or not.

It seems that to reopen the selection process for a sitting MP 2/3 of the constituency members must vote for that to happen. According to the article that didn't happen so he stays? Whats wrong with that?

I've never heard of him - from the comments he sounds like a big head but then when wasn't that a prerequisite for elected office?

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I think his views reflect those of Stephen Harper and, I assume, his constituents. However, some might think it a poor show that the 2/3s rule was introduced specifically to keep him in his position.

"Interesting" character. I notice the Mandela business - out of curiousity who else has been voted to become an "honourary" canadian citizen?

It didn't read the article that way but, having met the guy (at court, a lawyer I know was representing him), I agree that he is not very likeable.

On the basis of those recipients, one wonders when the following will have the same bestowed upon them, or why it wasn't before they died:

Barack Obama;
Jimmy Carter;
Kofi Annan;
John Hume;
David Trimble;
Yasser Arafat;
Yitzak Rabin;
Shimon Peres;
Mikhail Gorbachev;
Mother Teresa;
Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat;
Henry Kissinger; and
Woodrow Wilson

Ralph Reed's the front runner now, surely?

Man, I bet the NDP candidates who got elected in Quebec were just as shocked as everyone else that they got elected.

"Congratulations Ms Brosseau, you have been elected".

"Whaa, me? I actually won? I thought that the election was next week. I didn't even vote".

NDP, what an embarrassment and joke of an opposition party. If I knew this was going to happen I would have voted Liberal.

Iggy has a new job at the University of Toronto.

That was very quick, you almost have to wonder if it wasn't lined up before the election.

Did you do any digging here? Massey Hall has also recruited several other ex-politicos as quickly as they could after a demise.

The list includes Pierre Trudeau, Bob Rae and ..... Preston Manning.

U of T is an equal opportunity opportunist in this regard.

The others were all successful politicians. Mr Iggy was MP for 5 years leader for a couple of years and lead his party to unparalled failure. Of course all political careers ultimately end in failure but what was his success?

I see as the little quebecer sentiment falls away the little scotlander sentiment rises..........
