Yes. The Liberals defined modern Canada. A vote for Harper is one against the Canada to which we emigrated. I think it excusable for cradles to support such a party but immigrants should know better.

Excuse me....are you trying to say that the Libs eliminated the national debt, which is of course not true, although I wish that was the case.

They certainly attacked the deficit during a boom period, one that Mulroney's NAFTA had laid the foundation for and saw Canadian GDP increase faster than the US and Mexico ....

Sttill, it all ended badly and their arse's were punted...Praise the lord............Such is life....

Regarding the dangers of a conservative majority; Didnt people wonder the same thing about new labour... that the softened policies and more centrist economics would be abandoned the moment power was seized, and it didnt really turn out that way.

Politicians may flip flop, buy they are nearly all consistently in favour of one thing, and thats getting re-elected. Even the most enthusiastic conservative policy maker probably has at least one eye on making sure they get more than one majority term should it come to pass.

If its taken five or ten years of "softly softly" policies to get this far, would it not be deemed political suicide to abandon that as soon as they got a majority?

Good lord, are you aware you may inadvertently have said something positive about something the liberals did there

Governments come, governments go. That's political life. Nothing in politics is for ever. There was a time in UK politics where the conservatives seemed unassailable. Likewise with Labour.

Mulroney and NAFTA is another contentious issue. I'm not sure raising the ghost of Mulroney will do Conservative prospects much good. Wasnt he found to be crooked as a threepenny bit and responsible for just as much deficit spending as Trudeau?

In the interests of preserving BE.com's legal position let us just say that he was very forgetful. Like he forgot to tell the CRA about the hundreds of thousand dollars of cash he was given by foreign businessmen in return for absolutely no favours whatsoever.

and responsible for just as much deficit spending as Trudeau?
More.

That might seem a reasonable comment if it weren't for the fact that Harper is absolutely empty of morality and is focussed more on destroying the Liberal Party of Canada than on the interests of Canada and those of Canadians.

He sees himself as a revolutionary who would seek to establish a hegemony of puritanical radical religionists hand in hand with the oil sand developers.

He is, quite frankly, a mad megalomaniac and a very dangerous man.

Keeping going - you're helping Harper get his majority with these sorts of comments. I thought you were being ironic at first but I think you genuinely believe that.

Is there such a thing as a sane megalomaniac then?

You need to calm down a bit. There is a bit too much spittle in your most recent posting. I don't want to use the phrase 'Frothing loon of the left' but if you force my hand........

Really? What are you basing all that on? He must be a despot in accountants clothing then because he comes over as mind numbingly bland to me.

If his mission in life is to destroy the liberal party he's not doing a very good job of it. Stefane Dion did a better job of it from within, so maybe he joined the wrong party if that is really his aim.

Still, full marks for the use of very long words

Well while you're consulting your dictionary, I'll add this (in a less strident tone).

Has there ever been a Cabinet consisting of a comparably useless collection of no hope morons as the last one?

Hint: The answer has only two letters.
