Re: Vancouver island

I'm not clear of your priorities. If it's sports, Victoria might not be your top choice. West coast places like Tofino and Uclulet don't have many jobs. So what work and what lifestyle do you want?

Re: Home insurance with UK history

Did you get earthquake insurance? Last time we looked it was a very low additional amount and it could come in useful.

We had it when we lived in Victoria before, and we'll get it again when we...

Re: UK to CAD - Outgoings PM

To expand on what I said before, don't ignore the fact that you're moving to a completely different country.
Perhaps it's just our friends and where we've lived, but I don't think most Canadians...

Re: UK to CAD - Outgoings PM

Part of choosing where to live. In a town or suburb, close to work, then you can walk to most things (with or without dogs) and save that gym fee.

Canada's big, but most people live in their own...

Re: UK Drivers Licence in BC

Yes, and it's all diabetics. In the UK it's only insulin-dependent, which makes much more sense. A mild case of Type 2 diabetes, does not pose more of a danger than many other conditions.

Re: U.K. Nurse wanting to move to Vancouver island

Dampness and moss??? The island is quite big but most of it has dry summers. It's a much lower latitue, so longer winter days. Victoria is 48.4, and Edinburgh 55.51. (Both, of course, are in the...

Re: Going back to Canada

I hear that some people are commuting from Victoria to Vancouver. I assume they want the very expensive houses. Or can afford them.

Re: Going back to Canada

Yes. We've been watching it. Apparently some people are cashing in their Vancouver houses and then buying in Victoria.

movers, England to western Canada

I've looked through various posts and the wiki, but it seems to me that most experiences don't translate.

If someone has a great or lousy experience traveling South Africa to Canada, that only...

Re: Going back to Canada

We have. There seem to be more hot summer days in the south east than here in the south west, and last summer we had cold winds here, even when the sun was shining.

My memories of Victoria summers...

Re: Going back to Canada

I don't know where you're from originally, but I'd say Victoria has more than a few weeks of hot days. It's generally all summer, but rarely reaching 30, which is fine by us! Perhaps you think of...

Re: Going back to Canada

Great beaches along the east coast of England, but as you say, cold for swimming.

Dallas Road in Victoria is probably the most popular one, but not a great beach. Willows beach in Oak Bay is also...

Re: Going back to Canada

Fortunately, or maybe not, we've never been keen on exploring wild places, especially mountainous ones. We do like beaches, preferably without many people around, and they are more common in Canada....

Re: Going back to Canada

Yes, I think English people just accept it as the way things are, and the crush has crept up on them over decades, so they haven't really noticed. But it is a difference to many places in "the...

Re: Did anyone move back and have regrets?

I don't think our experience has any relevance to you, but we went to Canada in 1976 and spent the next 33 years there happily. Never thought about returning to the UK. We came back in 2009 and are...

Re: Forty foot container cost USA to UK

I'm wondering if the cost of a 40 foot container is twice that of a 20 foot in the end. This will be UK to Canada, but same amount of goods inside. We used a 20 foot when coming over, but my husband...

We noticed!

Shrewsbury is a nice town. I gather there's a lot of debate these days about how to pronounce it. "Shrowsbury" is considered pretentious, I hear. A good size and close to...

Re: Going back to Canada

Yes, I know that area and the Moss Street Market. When I mentioned foodie I wasn't just meaning locally -- I love being able to get great veg and bread at a market -- but nationally and the media.

Re: 18 years and going back.

Ah well, Mariabc, if you're moving from the BC interior to Spain, I can see the appeal in many ways. Whereabouts in Spain?

Re: Going back to Canada

No, but we always said we might return. And our sons are Canadians, still living there. Not much family in the UK -- not that we know well, anyway.

Re: Moving back to Canada

Thanks. That was useful.

I don't really see any problem with household goods that we are returning to Canada plus a few items bought here that we've owned for many years. But we'll be sure to...

Re: Moving back to Canada

I understand what you're saying, but I've looked over things and the problems seem to crop up with recently purchased high value items. We're mostly taking back what we brought over, plus a few...

Re: 18 years and going back.

Definitely. Which is why we moved back in 2009. But now we're reversing it. We don't regret our years here, and we've done the traveling and such we wanted to, but the calm quietness of west coast...

Re: Moving back to Canada

Really? I read about this and it doesn't say anything about citizens, dual or otherwise. We recently visited Canada on our UK passports for simplicity, and had no problems. Mind you, I see they've...
