Re: Books about US travel

One I mustn't forget - an important source for Jonathan Raban in 'Badland' - and that's 'Photographing Montana' by Donna Lucey. It's part biography, part diary, part pictorial history of the...

Re: Books about US travel

Thanks, Tim. I've seen 'Roads to Quoz' on Amazon and thought it looked interesting. I'll check out 'River Horse', too. Have you read any Jonathan Raban? 'Old Glory', 'Badland' and 'Hunting Mr...

Re: Whats peed you off today?

Quite agree. In fact, I'd extend that to 12 miles. I saved over £1000 in bus fares last year cycling to and from work (16-mile round trip). Probably 2 or 3 times that if I'd used a car.

Oh, I'm...

Re: Why do you want to move to Canada

'Cos The Daily Mail is a nasty, small-minded, vindictive, xenophobic, homophobic, bigoted, prejudice-pandering, mob-stoking, hate-mongering, cynically populist, ad hominem arse-wipe of a paper. You...

Re: 60 Day Medical Question

Do they have a hard and fast rule on it? I had a 90-day letter requesting my medical and final fee - though I didn't notice until it was too late that it said on the form that I had to have the...

Re: Why do you want to move to Canada

I just heard on the radio that in a poll conducted amongst Canadians asking them how they define themselves as Canadians, the top answer was 'Not Americans.' :)

Hm. This seems to be going the same way as the average BE thread.

Re: Why do you want to move to Canada

'Away From Her' and 'A History of Violence' are both excellent... with the former based on an Alice Munro short story (one of Canada's - nay, the world's - finest writers).

Re: Why do you want to move to Canada

Passengers

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0449487/

A USA/Canada co-production, filmed in Vancouver (Gastown and Spanish Banks Beach). Don't rush out, though. Shyamalam-lite. Not really worth it.

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

Okay. And my apologies to you for making that assumption. I was basing my remarks on my own experience of years of alcoholism and of being with alcoholics, and being in an alcoholic family. I...

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

I'm Taurus, too!

There's help out there. If you go the Al-Anon route, it may just be the best thing you've ever done. It was for my mother, I know... and she had 42 years of it with dad. She...

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

Well, I'll just say that I wasn't at all worried, either. My drinking pattern for a long time sounds like what you're describing. You may be okay... you may not have that switch in your head. I...

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

Yes, in a nutshell. I'd check out both the Drinkaware websites I've already mentioned and the AA website - even if you don't think it's that level of a problem. If you're concerned about it at all,...

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

I'm not writing him off as an alcoholic. Just saying that his drinking is excessive, and he could be exhibiting alcoholic traits. Sadly, I know only too well what they are.

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

The old ones are the best!

I had a friend say to me 'I used to prefer you when you were drunk.' I said, 'That's odd... I used to prefer you when I was drunk, too.'

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

Every 6-7 weeks? Now, that's sensible. Come the end of my drinking days, if I had a bottle of vodka... once that top was off, mate, it didn't go back on. That's the difference.

Re: Beer! How much is too much?

Don't always assume that. A standard-sized 500ml can of beer can contain anything from 1 to 7 units, depending on the alcohol content. A 5% lager will be around 2.3 units. Something like Special...
