When I did it, I was told no, it wouldn't be an classed as an overstay as I was in "pending" status. But that's just what I was told - I do not know the official answer.

Agree with that. If you don't need to go back to the UK, get that attorney and travel if you have to for a good one. I came on the VWP and made a similar decision (without the little package though)....

I dunno. That doesn't make it very pricey though. Isn't that similar getting a copy of your birth certificate or US citizenship certificate? For example, my DD is on my naturalization application...

You really were lucky. Around us, businesses are closing daily so those who lose a job really have no options or anywhere to turn for another job. They are all SOL.
