Re: Old UK passport - keep it?

Keep for sentimental value, and sometimes because you might have an old visa in it that you will need. For example, when I apply for a new visa to visit China, they ask the number of my last Chinese...

Re: Establishing Healthcare/Insurance Costs

Every plan is different, but in a general, broad sense:

You will pay the first $4,000 of all health insurance costs. There are some exceptions (like some preventive checkups or certain ailments)...

Re: Establishing Healthcare/Insurance Costs

Hi and welcome,

It's going to be rough. I'll just start with that. Really rough.

We need more details (i.e. your citizenship, marital status, for example) to come up with a better estimate, but...

Re: Relocating to US from UK

I might have missed it, but are you talking about Washington (the state) or Washington, D.C. (the nation's capital)?

Here it is as a map:

Re: Which grade??

A couple of different issues to consider:

a) Where are you going to University? Is it the US? If so, you need to realize that grade 9 in the US "counts" as far as it goes for your academic record....

Re: Universal Child Health Record

I think it will vary from state-to-state but when we moved we had our doctor in Hong Kong fill out our first vaccination record (using the state form from our school). It wasn't a problem.

Later...

Re: Recent Graduate looking for USA visa

Marriage or a student visa (have you considered getting an advanced degree?) You could come over on a one-year program to study and see if the marriage option is more appealing.

But...

Re: Effect of US immigration on kids

I think they will adjust better than you, or at least more quickly than you. They'll be in a more 'open' environment of a school system with new kids popping up all the time. Socially I would expect...

Re: Health insurance for over 65 age recently obtained green card ?

Check your own insurance. In some (rare) cases you can add a dependent parent as part of your family insurance plan. It's not common, but does exist in some plans.

Also, in some states (like...

Re: What to do with primary home before moving to US?

There is a special US tax form that is required if you own a substantial portion of a foreign company. It's not necessarily any additional tax, but it is a bit more paperwork to deal with.

Re: Paying (want to) US Social Security - US Employer in UK

State income tax is a real pain for expats. Some states really go after you, especially if you return to that state after your overseas posting. Their attitude is that you were only 'temporarily'...
