Re: US security clearances

There's no better advice in this thread than mine. I never said it was universal, but I have pointed out some fallacies in universal statements of other posters.

Re: US security clearances

Don't extrapolate from something that may well be an entrance requirement for a US Military Academy, to the OP's situation of entering the cleared workforce as a civilian. That's my point.

Re: Buying houses

Not at all. I bought my first house in the States when I was on an L1B. And, though I've lived in four different houses subsequently, I still own that one, and it rents like a champ.

The buying...

Re: US security clearances

You could ask the same question of the poster who wrote " As the service academies / DOD require it". Seems like quite a blanket statement.

But, you're right. I really only did DOD, and a little...

Re: US security clearances

I've hired literally hundreds of people into cleared jobs at a Top 10 Defense contractor. For them, they don't have a decision point of "dual national?" in their flow-chart, it's all devolved to...

Re: US security clearances

They don't require it. That's my point. You haven't cited any source, but here's one: NISPOM 2-209. Even non-US Citizens *can* get a clearance. It's incredibly rare; I've only seen it three or...

Re: US security clearances

It's clear you haven't spent a lot of time working with the military.

That's not definitive. It says "may", which is a world away from "will". In practice, simple possession and even regular use...

Re: US security clearances

I don't know the source for your "probably be asked to hand over", but I never heard of that in a decade in defense contracting.

And, were it to happen, the employee's response would, of course,...

Re: US security clearances

This isn't right, not even close. Please don't give advice unless you're certain it's true.

OP - PM me, and I'll talk you through it. I worked for a defense contractor for nearly 10 years.

Re: Any Brits in Rochester New York?

We have toddlers (3 and a half - does that still count as "toddler"?), so if you want to get together for a Playdate, let me know.

We should catch up in the New Year, chief. I'm back at work Monday, a couple of miles from you.

Re: Do you stand up?

I would stand for the anthem (and would stand for any country's anthem).

But I would not stand for some commentator's history lesson.

Re: US Citizenship: surrender UK Passport?

Only Yankee White. Common or garden Secret, Top Secret, SCI and SBBI and a bunch of others are all available to dual-nationals. Heck, you don't have to have citizenship to get a Secret.

Re: US Citizenship: surrender UK Passport?

Common fallacy. It is perfectly okay to be a dual-national and hold a security clearance. The only clearance unobtainable by dual-nationals is Yankee White.

Re: L1A to GC - but company about to spin

Don't know yet. This was a pre-emptive opinion-gathering exercise to see if the employee in question should push hard now to get things started, or kick back and wait.

L1A to GC - but company about to split

A moderately-rare situation, I'm sure.

British L1A visa holder employed by a Fortune 250 company, which is about to spin into three, separate, publicly-traded companies.

What is impact if GC...

Actually, I'm totally with you. If we allow the free movement of capital, it follows that we should allow the free movement of labor.

Re: Dual Nationality

Good point. I know a guy with three nationalities.

So, that raises a question: if British and American are the two best to have, what would be the third?

Qatari by birth would give some level...

Re: Which State Would You Live In Given The Choice?

CO.

If no constraints means no economic constraints, then I'd happily have a 5000 square foot apartment in Manhattan.

Re: Dual Nationality

The former massively outweighs the latter, particularly given that if you're in the latter situation you should have appropriate security detail, or be accepting of the risks.
