Re: Ping pom confused UK>Perth>UK>Perth>Melbourne>UK?

Being a ping-ponger shouldn't be seen as a problem. Go wherever makes you happy and is appropriate for you and your family at this particular time of your life. We've done 2 spells in Australia and...

Hi all,

Have searched the forums and also called the uk australian embassy line about this but just wanted to check if my assumptions are correct.

I lived in oz from early 2005 to late 2010. In...

Re: Positive signs in the Australian Real Estate Market

You can't really make a fair comparison between London and any Australian city, particularly somewhere like Brisbane (you wouldn't compare Glasgow with Sydney property values).

Prime Central...

Re: Car Shipping - Roll On Roll Off Service

That's a good shout thanks - I will look into this.

The more I investigate prices of cars in Oz the more frightening they look. Taking my car over would be ideal if its allowable and not a...

Just to pick this up again, am I right in thinking that sending my personal whisky collection in a crate with the rest of my belongings would incur the following on each bottle:

Duty
GST

Re: 2.5x salary to achieve same standard of living as UK?

2.3 is no more useful than 2.5.

In fact 2.5 could become 2.3 in a short space of time if exchange rates move.

If people don't want to create a budget spreadsheet or do some internet research...

Re: Compare standard of living in the UK with Australia

Re Brisbane/Melbourne I don't think there are any facts to back up the view on here that people find it harder to relocate to Brisbane. If there is anecdotal evidence to suggest this then it's...

Re: 2.5x salary to achieve same standard of living as UK?

Can't speak for that industry specifically, but a lead BA would tend to be hired at significantly more than the standard BA $650 or whatever, and financial services tend to pay well on top of that....

Re: 2.5x salary to achieve same standard of living as UK?

Depends what the OP's BA skills are. Does he have specialist skills in specialist applications or does he do standard BA work? I've seen plenty roles at $650 but I've been offered over $1000 still...

Re: Melbourne wins "The Economists' most liveable city in the world for 3rd year in a

I got that bit, was interested in a bit more detail about how the numbers were derived. Was it just a team of people ranking factors as tolerable etc, or was it more fact/statistics based?

Re: Melbourne wins "The Economists' most liveable city in the world for 3rd year in a

Agree. It can be fine. But on other occasions I've been stuck in worse than I've ever seen in central London. Think it depends on a variety of factors.

Overall, personally, I'd say the traffic is...

Re: Melbourne wins "The Economists' most liveable city in the world for 3rd year in a

That's right. There was a programme on tv in the UK called megacities which explored this. Apparently once cities hit a certain size (7m?) it becomes basically impossible to effectively move people...

Re: Melbourne wins "The Economists' most liveable city in the world for 3rd year in a

Are these awards not a bit pointless? How liveable a city is surely depends on personal circumstances/interests/job/responsibilities etc.

I love Melbourne, and will probably move back there, but...

Re: Aussie Dollar continues to fall - £1 buys $1.66

No-one knows for certain obviously, but I expect more drops over time in the AUD. I said at the start of the thread you'd be a mug to buy $A at 1.66 and it's been a good decision so far with it...

Too many snobs on this thread who think you can't survive unless you are living like a king. Yes, Australia is very expensive. But some of the views on here are putting...

Re: places to visit between sydney and brisbane

My sister in law used to live in Taree, and I'd say it's both (a) a pretty river city, and (b) full of bogans. It may have changed by now - last time I visited was about 7 years ago.

Nothing wrong...

Re: Aussie Dollar continues to fall - £1 buys $1.66

Good to hear. Maybe we can move back to Oz after all!

I still think Carney announcing forward guidance (if that happened) would really devalue the £ in a hurry though. The Australian issue may be...

Re: Aussie Dollar continues to fall - £1 buys $1.66

The £ got smashed yesterday due to the new saviour at the bank of england. Sounds like this guy will be as useless as Mervin King. In fact, if he ever indicates forward guidance (which sounds...

Re: places to visit between sydney and brisbane

We've done that drive a few times but I can't remember the names of all the places. I'd highly recommend Lennox Head (a smaller, quieter, nicer, version of Byron Bay) and avoiding Kempsie.

The...

Re: Going to sound like a complete idoit.

Agree. The UK has plenty bad points but the public transport can't possibly be worse than the non-existent system in Oz.

In fact the mere memory of waiting forever to be crushed onto a...
