Re: Moving Back to US - Would you do it now?

San Francisco is still a wonderful city. Violent crime, for example, has been trending downwards for a long time now and is at its lowest level since... the late1950's. I am really struggling to...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

Yes, this is why I don't pfaff around with the substitute 1099 stuff and do as you outline.

Re: Let's talk about cars

Most residential streets in S.F. have no side or middle of the road markings. I think they pretty consistently have stop or yield lines at junctions. So although lines are going to help, they clearly...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I’ve taken a couple of Waymo rides. They drive way better than many human drivers, especially taxi and Uber drivers. And as a frequent pedestrian in S.F. I trust them far more actually to stop at...

Re: Let's talk about cars

There was an horrific crash in the Bay Area of one of these vehicles. The proximate cause was alcohol (over twice the legal limit) and cocaine in the system of the driver. Car crashed into a...

Re: Getting through Customs/Immigration faster at US airports - MPC App

I was addressing solely the Customs aspect of this, namely that even you go the MPC route (or GE...) you do still make a Customs declaration.

Re: Getting through Customs/Immigration faster at US airports - MPC App

The MPC App asks these customs-related questions as well.

Re: Getting through Customs/Immigration faster at US airports - MPC App

I arrived back at SFO this week at about 6pm. Never seen such insanely long lines for both citizens and non-citizens. But with MPC we were through in about 10 minutes. It's puzzling so few people use...

Re: Medicare choices

That's a good question. I know the only policy that my erstwhile self-insured employer had that was covered by the California COBRA rules was Kaiser - an HMO.

Re: Medicare choices

With the "might" being the operative factor! It doesn't apply if your employer is employer is _self-insured_, as many large companies are.

Re: Medicare choices

It can actually be much worse than that. Some COBRA coverage explicitly states that it is secondary to Medicare _whether or not_ a person actually signs up for Medicare. There was a horrible case I...

Re: UK state pension how longer after claim did you get the pension?

Amazingly my first payment arrived in my US bank account only a few weeks after I applied. I was past my pension age by a year or so at that point.

I read the Reddit discussion this is from. No discussion about past debt versus future unfortunately. It’s certainly a common tactic to avoid future medical and nursing home debt being a joint...

Re: Pension Commencement lump Sum approach

That's correct. And that's true for pretty much any aspect of your return. Simple example: let's say you failed to report dividends of $10k from a 1099-DIV. The IRS typically have three years to come...

Re: WTF in America Part 2

I wondered about that too. Also, assuming that the debt was incurred during their marriage, I would presume creditors could legitimately still come after that by definition. For healthcare debt I...

Re: Move Offer

Make sure that the cost of anything in the relocation package that’s considered taxable income is “grossed up” so that your employer effectively pays the tax on it. Otherwise you’ll have a...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Every 15k for my 25 year old BMW with almost 300k on it. Synthetic oil and that's actually what BMW recommends for the vehicle.
